Truecaller has expanded its Lite app to 11 more countries after a successful launch in Nigeria, bringing caller ID and spam protection to millions of users on entry-level Android smartphones

Truecaller Expands Lite App Following Nigeria Success, Extends Anti-Spam Protection to 11 Countries

Truecaller has announced the expansion of its lightweight mobile application, Truecaller Lite, to 11 additional countries after what the company described as a successful early rollout in Nigeria, reinforcing the country’s strategic importance in the fight against spam calls and mobile fraud.

The global contact verification and communication safety platform said Nigeria was among the first markets worldwide to receive the new app, with feedback from Nigerian users helping to validate the product before its broader international deployment across Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Designed specifically for entry-level Android smartphones, Truecaller Lite addresses a growing challenge in emerging markets where millions of users rely on devices with limited storage, memory and processing power. In Nigeria, where such devices remain among the most widely used smartphones, the app is distributed through both the Google Play Store and partner OEM channels, allowing users to access fraud protection without sacrificing valuable device space.

The company noted that many of the regions experiencing rapid growth in spam calls and digital fraud are also markets where entry-level Android devices dominate internet access, making lightweight security solutions increasingly important.

Unlike a stripped-down version of its flagship application, Truecaller said Lite was built from the ground up as a standalone Android app tailored to lower-specification devices. At just 10 MB in size, the app offers core features including caller identification, spam and fraud blocking, default dialer functionality, number search and contact management while maintaining fast performance on resource-constrained smartphones.

According to the company, users of Truecaller Lite receive the same level of protection as those using the main app because both products rely on the same global database. Truecaller said its systems identified more than 68 billion spam and fraudulent calls worldwide in 2025 alone.

The company also highlighted the growing scale of unwanted communication in Nigeria, revealing that the country ranked as Africa’s most spammed nation in 2025. It said 51 per cent of all unknown calls received by Nigerian users during the year were identified as spam or fraudulent, meaning more than one out of every two unknown calls was potentially harmful.

Commenting on the expansion, Chief Executive Officer of Truecaller, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, said access to safe communication should not be determined by the type of smartphone a person owns.

“Safe communication should not depend on the phone you have,” Jhunjhunwala said.

“The next billion users live in markets where entry-level devices are often the norm. Truecaller Lite is a new product built specifically for them, and it was important for us to provide the same protection from spam and fraud that users expect from Truecaller around the world.”

Following its initial launch in Nigeria and Colombia earlier this year, Truecaller Lite is now being rolled out in Kenya, Ghana, Algeria, Chile, Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The company said additional launches across emerging markets are planned in the coming months.

In Nigeria, the app remains available for download on compatible devices through the Google Play Store and the Transsion app store, further expanding access to mobile security tools for millions of smartphone users.
