US Embassy to Reschedule Visa Interviews for Nigerian Applicants Due to Technical Glitches

The US Department of State has announced that Nigerian applicants who encountered difficulties with their visa applications due to technical glitches will have their interviews rescheduled.

According to the agency, these glitches were the result of a partial system outage that significantly impacted consular operations in Nigeria.

Jennifer Johnson, the press officer for the Bureau of Consular Affairs, recently informed Punch Newspaper that the consulate will contact applicants who had their interviews affected regardingrescheduling.

In recent weeks, multiple reports have surfaced about technical issues affecting the visa application process for Nigerians, particularly with the new visa appointment system. In 2024, the US Mission in Nigeria transitioned to this new system to simplify the scheduling process for the Abuja embassy and Lagos consulate.

However, many applicants have faced challenges, including delays in securing appointments and processing applications. Under the new system, Nigerians in Lagos are required to visit the consulate general twice as part of the application process. The mission’s goal was to make visa appointments at both the embassy and consulate easier and more transparent for applicants.

Additionally, in February 2025, the US removed the “drop box” visa renewal option, which previously allowed eligible applicants to renew their visas without needing an in-person interview. Unfortunately, this change has led to longer wait times and further complications for applicants.

Acknowledging these issues, the Mission stated, “We are aware of the challenges many visa applicants are facing as the new system is implemented.” However, Press Officer Ms. Johnson noted earlier today that the glitches have been resolved and normal operations have resumed. “Visa applicants whose interviews must be rescheduled due to the outage will be notified,” she stated, adding, “All consular operations have returned to normal.” Read More
