Waste management vendors in Ogun have petitioned Gov. Dapo Abiodun, accusing OGWAMA MD Abayomi Hunye of alleged abuse of office, misappropriation, and oppressive policies. Hunye responds

Corruption Storm Hits OGWAMA as Waste Vendors Petition Ogun Governor Over Alleged Abuse of Office by MD Abayomi Hunye

A fresh storm of controversy has hit the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) following a petition submitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun by the Association of Waste Management Vendors Recycling of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, accusing the Managing Director of the agency, Mr. Abayomi Hunye, of alleged abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds, and policies described as oppressive to operators in the recycling sector.

The petition, dated January 2026 and addressed directly to the governor, called for an immediate investigation into what the association described as “a pattern of misconduct, abuse of power, and fraudulent conversion of public funds” allegedly linked to the tenure of Mr. Hunye, who assumed office in June 2024.

According to the association’s executive officers, their action was driven by what they called a responsibility “to protect the interests of our members and uphold the original mission behind the re-creation of OGWAMA,” which was enacted into law by the Ogun State House of Assembly in 2020.

“Our complaint centres on the administrative activities of the Managing Director, Hon. Abayomi Hunye, whose antecedents and conduct do not reflect the integrity he publicly claims,” the petition stated.

Tractor, Fish Farm, Transformers: The Allegations

Among the allegations raised is a claim involving an agricultural tractor allegedly recovered from Mr. Hunye after his tenure as Chairman of the Ogun State Agricultural and Multipurpose Credit Agency (OSAMCA). The petitioners alleged that the tractor was taken to his village in Ipokia, used for private benefit, and only returned after pressure from a new administration.

“He returned the tractor and paid ₦13 million within 72 hours after threats of legal action. This, however, does not account for the revenue allegedly generated and retained privately during the period,” the petition claimed.

The association further alleged that a ₦50 million Aliami Fish Farming Project in Ijebu-Ode was a phantom initiative that never materialised despite funds allegedly being released.

“The project did not see the light of the day, yet the money left government coffers under his watch,” the petition alleged.

Another allegation relates to the distribution of government-owned transformers during Mr. Hunye’s tenure as Acting Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives. The association claimed that communities were allegedly compelled to pay ₦2 million to private accounts before transformers were released.

“Only communities that paid were considered. Protests by women in one community reportedly led to his exit from the office,” the petition said.

Claims of Lifestyle, Recruitment, and Financial Control

The petition also alleged a long-standing pattern of embezzlement, including claims that Mr. Hunye previously resigned from a Lagos State ministry over cooperative fund issues—an allegation the association described as verifiable.

Further claims included alleged nepotism within OGWAMA, delayed payments to PSP operators despite regular fund releases, unexplained penalties allegedly routed through private channels, and the construction of a property valued at over ₦500 million in Laderin, which the association said should be subjected to forensic scrutiny.

“If OGWAMA accounts and outflows are investigated, the truth will shock the world,” the petition warned.

The association also accused the OGWAMA management of imposing oppressive financial levies, including compulsory payments of ₦50,000 for workshops—allegedly even for non-attendees—under threat of licence denial.

OGWAMA MD Abayomi Hunye Reacts

When contacted by NewsHeadline247 via WhatsApp for his reaction to the allegations, Mr. Abayomi Hunye initially requested time to respond. However, after several hours, he replied tersely, dismissing the claims.

“This story is irrelevant to me. I don’t have their time,” Hunye said.

Call for Government Intervention

The association stressed that its members—many of whom it said are APC supporters—remain committed to supporting Governor Abiodun’s administration, insisting that the petition was filed in the public interest.

“Government policies must be fair, equitable, and just. Our appeal is to protect our livelihood and the integrity of OGWAMA,” the association said. Read More
