2027 Lagos Race: Hamzat Gets Sanwo-Olu’s Backing as APC Flagbearer, Sonayon-James Named Deputy

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially presented Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, with Princess Damilola Sonayon-James named as his running mate.

The announcement was made on Thursday through the governor’s verified X account, where he described the pair as a formidable team equipped to sustain and expand the developmental strides recorded in Lagos State.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the choice of Hamzat and Sonayon-James reflects the administration’s commitment to continuity, competence, and inclusive leadership.

“The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” the governor stated.

He noted that the APC ticket embodies the strength, diversity, and future aspirations of Lagos residents, while applauding Hamzat’s role in the current administration.

Sanwo-Olu described the deputy governor as a committed public servant and dependable partner whose contributions have significantly advanced the state’s development agenda.

“Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance, and a steadfast advocate for progress,” he said.

The governor also commended Sonayon-James, portraying her as an accomplished sustainability professional and grassroots leader whose emergence reflects the aspirations of many Lagosians.

“Joining him as his running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion whose commitment reflects the aspirations of many Lagosians,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in the duo’s ability to build on the achievements of his administration and drive Lagos to greater heights.

He subsequently called on APC members, stakeholders, and residents across the state to rally behind the ticket ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“I invite party faithful, stakeholders, and all Lagosians to support this team as we continue our shared mission of building a Greater Lagos,” the governor said.

Hamzat’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate followed a landslide victory at the party’s primary election held on May 21 at the APC secretariat in Ogba, where he secured 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes.
