Wayas was the first Nigerian Senate president to be re-elected to the position

A former president of the Nigerian Senate, Joseph Wayas, has been announced dead.

Governor of Cross Rivers State, Ben Ayade, announced this on Thursday in Calabar, the state capital.

He was aged 81 years.

Wayas, a Cross River State -born politician, was said to have passed away in a London Hospital in the early hours of Thursday after a protracted illness.

The late octogenarian served as Nigeria’s third Senate President during the country’s second republic and was in office from 1979 to 1983.

In 1983, Wayas became the first Nigerian Senate president to be re-elected to the position following his victory at the general elections of that year.
