‘Don’t abandon objectivity…,’ Olota of Ota tasks NUJ members on factual, credible reporting
“Be careful and ensure you balance your stories strictly to the tenets of your professional calling”
The Olota of Ota, His Royal Majesty, Kabiyesi (Oba) Kabiru Adeyemi Obalanlege, on Monday, advised journalists to be factual in their reporting and verify stories before publication to give credibility to online journalism.
The Aworiland monarch advised during a courtesy visit by members of NUJ Independent Online Chapel, Ota, led by their Chairman, Comrade Kayode Taiwo at Olota Palace.
According to Olota, the reckless abandonment of objectivity and credibility manifested in some online reporting has necessitated a need for the NUJ national body to consider the creation of the use of Stamp and Seal, with the identification number of every journalist to differentiate between fake and genuine journalists, just as it is done in other professional bodies, like the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).
“Being a practising journalist I can’t afford to engage in any act capable of dragging the profession in the mud, so must every journalist. As the Fourth Estate of the Realm, we should be bold enough to hold the government accountable for its duty to the governed.
“Be careful and ensure you balance your stories strictly to the tenets of your professional calling.
“Being a journalist myself, and lecturer both at home and overseas, I’m very at home working with you. I remember the newsroom life. Everybody is the same. Journalism is a small world. We have to be our brothers’ keepers”, he said.
In response, the NUJ Chairman, Independent Online, Ota Chapel, Comrade Taiwo, thanked the Kabiyesi for his advice, appreciating his lecture on the importance of training, and promising his members would hold it as gospel truth.
Comrade Taiwo further noted that the association had wanted to embark on a courtesy visit to corporate organizations since its formal recognition by the Ogun State NUJ Chapter, but thought it wise to begin from the Kabiyesi to receive royal blessing. More
