ICYMI: Major Political Shift in Delta State as Gov. Oborevwori, Okowa, Others Officially Join APC
Asaba, Delta State – April 28, 2025 – In a significant development ahead of the 2027 general elections, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move, formalized at a large event at the Cenotaph in Asaba on April 28, ends the PDP’s 26-year control of the oil-rich South-South state.
The APC leadership, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Hope Uzodimma, welcomed the new members. The transition includes Delta’s state assembly members, executive council, local government chairmen, and councillors, signaling a near-total collapse of the PDP’s structure in the state.
Governor Oborevwori described the decision as a “movement” driven by Delta’s interests, following consultations with stakeholders. “President Bola Tinubu has shown commitment to our state, and we cannot oppose him in 2027,” he said, emphasizing alignment with the federal government for development.
Okowa, the PDP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, reinforced this, stating, “This is about connecting Delta to Abuja for the benefit of our people. It’s a bold, patriotic step.” He dismissed personal motives, framing the shift as a collective strategy.
Shettima praised the move as a “historic milestone” for the APC, highlighting its potential to strengthen the party’s influence in the South-South. “This is a testament to the progressive vision of Delta’s leadership,” he said.
The PDP expressed surprise but minimized the defection’s impact, asserting confidence in its national standing. Analysts, however, view the shift as a blow to the opposition, with Delta’s realignment potentially influencing other PDP strongholds. The defection has sparked discussions about the APC’s growing dominance and the opposition’s challenges ahead of 2027. Read More
