Ogun PCRC Chair Demands PTA Reforms, Says Members, Executives Must Have Children in State Schools

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ogun State has called for urgent reforms in the operations of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), insisting that only parents or guardians with children currently enrolled in schools should serve as members or executives.

The State PCRC Chairman, Ven. Samson Kunle Popoola JP, raised the concern in Abeokuta while speaking on accountability in the education system.

According to him, the trend of individuals holding PTA executive positions without having wards in the schools undermines transparency and derails the associations from their true mission.

“It has come to our notice that some PTA executives and members do not have wards currently enrolled in the schools they oversee. This practice undermines transparency, opens doors to exploitation, and diverts PTAs from their true mandate of protecting the welfare of students,” Popoola said.

The PCRC chairman urged the Ogun State Ministry of Education to issue a clear directive mandating that PTA membership and executive roles be restricted strictly to parents or guardians of students currently enrolled in schools.

He further recommended that there should be annual verification of PTA membership at the beginning of each academic session to ensure compliance.

Popoola noted that PTAs were originally designed to serve as guardians of students’ welfare and advocates for improved learning environments, but without proper accountability, the associations risk being hijacked for personal or political gains.

“This reform will ensure that PTAs are truly representative, transparent, and accountable, while also protecting our students from undue exploitation” he added.

He concluded “Together, let us safeguard the integrity of our education system and make PTAs a genuine partner in shaping the future of Ogun State”. Read More
