President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military hierarchy, appointing new Service Chiefs as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture.

According to a statement released from the State House on Friday, General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu takes over as Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke has been appointed Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas assumes office as the new Chief of Naval Staff.

The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.

President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for what he described as their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” commending their contributions to the nation’s defence and stability.

He urged the newly appointed officers to “justify the confidence reposed in them” by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship within the Armed Forces.

“All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement added.
