Customs Strengthens Excise Duty: Trains Officers, Traders on Digital Register System
In a major step toward enhancing transparency and efficiency in excise duty administration, the Imo/Abia Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced a two-day on-site training for Resident Officers and Excise Traders on the Excise Register System (ERS).
The training, which began on Thursday, October 16, 2025, was jointly organised by the Department of Excise, Free Trade Zone and Industrial Incentive, and the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The goal was to equip participants with the practical skills required to operate the ERS for improved data management, accountability, and revenue efficiency.
Declaring the session open, the Customs Area Controller of the Imo/Abia Command, Comptroller Blessing Ihenacho, represented by the Deputy Comptroller of Operations, DC Happiness Ekpi-Ebri, urged participants to take the training seriously.
“The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to leveraging technology to promote transparency and efficiency. Officers must ensure they apply this system effectively to achieve its intended purpose,” she said.
Comptroller Ihenacho noted that the introduction of the ERS aligns with the Service’s ongoing reforms to block revenue leakages, promote transparency, and modernize customs operations in line with global standards.
Speaking on behalf of the visiting team, Assistant Comptroller Aliyu Idris of the Department of Excise, Free Trade Zone and Industrial Incentive, said the training received the approval of the Comptroller-General of Customs to ensure uniform proficiency across all excise factories nationwide.
“Mastery of the ERS will not only enhance accountability but also streamline excise operations, making them more transparent and efficient,” Idris explained.
The two-day session brought together excise traders from several top manufacturing companies, including Nigeria Bottling Company, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Golden Guinea Breweries Plc, Seven-Up Bottling Company Ltd, Afrobeverages & Distillers Ltd, and Henaco Beverages Ltd.
The introduction of the Excise Register System (ERS) represents a significant technological leap for the Nigeria Customs Service, aimed at digitalizing excise data processes and ensuring better tracking of production and tax compliance in Nigeria’s industrial sector.
The Excise Register System (ERS) was introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service under its modernization agenda to digitalize excise duty collection and monitoring. The training sessions across commands, including Imo/Abia, have been publicly confirmed by the Service as part of a national rollout to improve operational transparency and reduce manual errors.
