Lilian Adebayo, wife of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has expressed confidence that the party will defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections — but only if Nigerians are “honest with themselves” about the current state of the nation.

Mrs. Adebayo made the remark on Wednesday during an interview with journalists after an event in Abuja, stressing that the SDP has successfully resolved its internal crisis following the expulsion of its former national chairman, Shehu Gabam, and other executives.

“There is always a crisis in every political party; the SDP has been able to handle its own. The problems in the party have been resolved,” she stated.

According to her, Nigerians must now choose between continued hardship under the APC and a new path to national recovery under the SDP.

“He has a great chance of winning the election if Nigerians are honest with themselves,” she said, referring to her husband. “If Nigerians think that the ones they consistently vote for would move the country forward, they live in denial.”

The comment comes amid renewed optimism in the SDP following the leadership shake-up that saw Gabam and several other officials expelled.

Earlier this week, the party’s state chairmen called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police to investigate Gabam over alleged misappropriation of party funds.

Party insiders believe the recent restructuring has strengthened the SDP’s position ahead of the 2027 polls, positioning it as a credible alternative to the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Read More
