China has declared full support for President Bola Tinubu’s government, opposing U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians. Beijing says it rejects interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs

The Chinese government has declared its firm support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following threats of military action against Nigeria by United States President Donald Trump.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, said Beijing firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.
Ning was responding to questions regarding Trump’s reported threat of military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Ning stated.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” she added.
The statement underscores China’s growing diplomatic alignment with Nigeria under the Tinubu administration amid rising international tensions.
Reacting to the development, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, shared China’s response on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.
Onanuga reiterated that the Nigerian government has consistently denied any form of religious discrimination or persecution in the country.
“Nigeria remains a secular nation that protects the rights of all citizens, regardless of faith,” Onanuga had said in previous statements defending the administration’s position.
