Police to Resume Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement January 2, 2026
The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the tinted glass permit nationwide, effective January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the misuse of tinted vehicles by criminal elements.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the decision followed a careful assessment of prevailing security threats across the country.
According to the Police, intelligence reports have shown that criminal gangs and other individuals have exploited the suspension of tinted glass permit enforcement to perpetrate crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences.
Hundeyin explained that contrary to public perception, the enforcement of the tinted glass regulation was never halted by any court order.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public of the planned resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court,” the statement read.
He clarified that, “It is important to state clearly that at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles.”
The police spokesperson noted that the earlier suspension of enforcement was a voluntary decision by the Force, aimed at giving motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents without undue pressure.
“In the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience, the Force suspended enforcement to allow motorists ample opportunity to complete the registration process,” Hundeyin said.
However, with worsening security trends nationwide, the Police said enforcement must now resume in the interest of public safety.
“This decision follows a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens,” the statement added.
The Force urged motorists to ensure compliance with the tinted glass permit requirements ahead of the January 2 deadline, warning that defaulters would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law.
The Nigeria Police reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that all security measures are designed to protect law-abiding citizens while denying criminals the tools to operate undetected. Read More
