President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Damilola Ogunbiyi on becoming the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious TIME Earth Awards, describing the recognition as a testament to both her personal excellence and Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Ogunbiyi’s outstanding contributions to the global clean energy transition. She currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General.
The TIME Earth Awards are among the organisation’s highest honours, recognising individuals whose work has made a lasting impact in combating climate change and advancing sustainable energy systems worldwide.
Tinubu commended Ogunbiyi’s leadership in promoting decarbonisation, particularly in developing countries, noting that her efforts continue to shape global responses to pressing energy and climate challenges.
He highlighted that under her leadership, Sustainable Energy for All has supported over 100 countries and helped secure more than $1.6 trillion in energy finance commitments—an achievement he described as transformative.
According to the President, the international recognition underscores Ogunbiyi’s professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to sustainable development.
“This achievement not only reflects her personal excellence but also reinforces Nigeria’s leadership in driving innovative solutions to global development challenges,” Tinubu stated.
He added that Ogunbiyi’s accomplishments have elevated Nigeria’s profile globally, particularly in climate action and energy access, while also inspiring a new generation of Nigerian professionals.
