The Democratic Republic of Congo has secured a historic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending a 52-year absence from football’s biggest stage.

The Leopards claimed a 1-0 victory over Jamaica in their intercontinental playoff final on Wednesday morning, with Axel Tuanzebe emerging as the decisive hero.

This marks only DR Congo’s second appearance at the World Cup, their first being in 1974 when they competed as Zaire. CAF celebrated the achievement on X, writing: “52 years later. The return was worth the run. Already proud, DRC.”

FIFA also acknowledged the milestone, tweeting: “Dreams unlocked. Congo DR are going to the #FIFAWorldCup.”

DR Congo reached the playoff final after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Nigeria, setting the stage for their triumphant qualification. The Leopards now join nine other African nations in the 2026 tournament, signaling a new era for Congolese football.
