Leading figures in Nigeria’s film industry on Wednesday gathered in Lagos to pay their final respects to late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo during an emotional service of songs held ahead of his burial.

The tribute ceremony, which took place at the Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, attracted family members, friends, colleagues and admirers who came together to celebrate the life and legacy of the beloved actor.

Among the prominent personalities in attendance were Nancy Isime, IK Ogbonna, Omoni Oboli, Ini Edo, Yomi Casual, Ayo Makun, Ruth Kadiri, Kate Henshaw, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Mbong Amata, Stan Nze, Blessing Obasi, Nkechi Blessing, BamBam, Funny Bone, Uti Nwachukwu and Chigul.

The gathering followed the release of Ekubo’s burial arrangements by his family last week. According to the schedule, a wake-keep will hold on June 17, while the actor will be laid to rest on June 18 in his hometown in Abia State. An interment and reception will follow the burial ceremony.

The event was marked by heartfelt tributes and emotional reflections as colleagues and friends recounted memorable moments shared with the late actor and highlighted his contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The impressive turnout underscored the deep respect and admiration Ekubo earned throughout his career, with dozens of actors and entertainers united in a powerful display of solidarity and support for his family.

News of the actor’s death emerged last month after he reportedly passed away on May 11 at the age of 40 following a battle with cancer.

In a statement, his family disclosed that he died at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

His passing came after months of public concern over his absence from social media. Ekubo had not made any posts on Instagram since 2024, sparking speculation among fans about his wellbeing.

Last year, model Oma Nnadi addressed enquiries regarding the actor’s disappearance from social media, urging the public to respect his privacy and noting that not everyone chooses to maintain an active online presence.

Beyond his success on screen, Ekubo was admired for his thoughtful views on life and human relationships. Following the deaths of singer Mohbad and actor Junior Pope, he shared messages encouraging compassion, empathy and support for people facing difficult times.

As preparations continue for his final farewell, Wednesday’s service of songs served as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact Alexx Ekubo made on Nollywood and the many lives he touched throughout his career.
