A viral video allegedly showing armed bandits displaying large sums of cash believed to have been obtained from ransom payments has triggered renewed concerns over Nigeria’s persistent security crisis.
The footage surfaced online on Saturday after it was shared by Bakatsine, a journalist widely known for covering insecurity and conflict in Nigeria’s North-West region.
Posting the clip on his X account, Bakatsine expressed concern over the situation, writing: “This video shows bandits flaunting money obtained through ransom payments. May Allah bring an end to this tragedy and grant Nigeria lasting peace.”
The authenticity of the video and the claims surrounding the source of the money have not been independently verified.
Kidnapping for ransom remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing security challenges, particularly across the North-West and parts of the North-Central regions. Armed criminal groups have continued to target communities, motorists, schools and farmers, demanding huge sums for the release of victims.
Despite ongoing military offensives and security operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps, reports of fresh attacks, abductions and ransom demands continue to emerge from several states, highlighting the persistent threat posed by armed banditry.
