Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her appeal for Nigerians to embrace home gardening after harvesting fresh vegetables from her garden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to a post by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on X on Tuesday, the First Lady visited the vegetable garden on Monday for another harvest from the plot established about two years ago under the Every Home A Gardeninitiative.
The thriving garden produced a fresh supply of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin, highlighting the sustainability of the initiative.
Following the harvest, Tinubu distributed part of the vegetables to members of her staff, using the opportunity to encourage Nigerians to cultivate the habit of sharing with others and supporting their communities.
The vegetable garden was inaugurated in July 2024 under the Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme aimed at encouraging household farming and strengthening food security amid increasing food prices across the country.
The initiative was launched alongside the Every Home A Garden competition, designed to inspire women and families to establish vegetable gardens within their homes.
Speaking at the unveiling, the First Lady explained that the project was intended to demonstrate that even limited spaces around homes could be transformed into productive gardens capable of providing nutritious food while reducing household feeding costs.
Since its establishment, the garden has cultivated a variety of crops, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass, serving as a practical example of Tinubu’s advocacy for food security, healthy living, household farming and environmental sustainability.
