Businessman and philanthropist, Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, on the first anniversary of the revered monarch’s passing.
Oba Adetona died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a brief illness, bringing to an end one of the longest and most influential reigns in Nigeria’s traditional institution.
Marking the first memorial of the respected monarch, Onabanjo, a prince from the Fusengbuwa Royal House and a leading contender for the Awujale stool, released an emotional tribute titled, “One Year On, Yet His Legacy Continues To Speak.”
In the tribute, Onabanjo described the late monarch as an exceptional leader whose reign transformed leadership, safeguarded the rich cultural heritage of Ijebuland and elevated the kingdom’s prestige across generations.
Reflecting on Oba Adetona’s life, he said reading the monarch’s biography reinforced the belief that true royalty is defined not only by birth but by vision, courage, integrity and unwavering dedication to the people.
According to him, the late Awujale’s life remains a timeless example of selfless service and principled leadership, adding that his remarkable journey continues to inspire present and future generations.
Onabanjo noted that Oba Adetona’s story goes beyond history, describing it as a guide for those entrusted with the responsibility of serving Ijebuland with honour and commitment.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul while expressing confidence that his enduring legacy would continue to inspire leaders committed to the progress and unity of the people.
“A year may have passed, but legends never leave. Their values live on in the hearts they inspire,” Onabanjo stated, emphasizing that the memory and influence of the late Awujale remain deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Ijebuland.
