New passenger data released by Emirates Airlines has revealed that China was the most popular international destination for Nigerian travellers in 2025, with more Nigerians flying to the Asian nation than any other country through the airline’s global network.
According to the airline, 11,530 Nigerian passengers travelled to destinations in China during the year, making it the top overseas destination. Guangzhou accounted for nearly 80 per cent of all travel to mainland China, reaffirming its status as a key commercial centre for Nigerian traders, importers and business travellers.
Other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, also recorded strong passenger traffic, highlighting the growing commercial and business links between Nigeria and China.
The United Kingdom ranked as another major destination, with more than 5,850 Nigerians travelling there during the summer season. London Heathrow remained the busiest UK gateway, welcoming over 2,500 passengers, while Manchester continued to attract significant traffic from business travellers and members of the Nigerian diaspora.
The United States also remained a preferred long-haul destination, with about 2,500 Nigerians travelling through Emirates’ network to its 11 American gateways. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport received nearly one-third of all US-bound passengers, while Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Boston also recorded strong demand.
Emirates disclosed that more than 44,000 passengers departed Nigeria on its flights between May 1 and August 31, 2025, reflecting increasing demand for international travel and stronger connectivity to major global destinations.
Dubai remained one of the airline’s most sought-after destinations, attracting over 6,370 Nigerian travellers for shopping, business, tourism and family holidays. The city also continued to serve as a strategic transit hub for onward connections across the Emirates network.
Other popular destinations among Nigerian travellers included Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius, Seychelles and several European cities, indicating a diverse mix of business, education, religious pilgrimage, tourism and family-related travel.
The airline also identified a growing trend towards independent travel. More than 61 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelled alone during the 2025 summer travel period, making solo travellers the largest passenger segment. Families accounted for 17 per cent of travellers, while 12 per cent travelled as couples.
Emirates said it continues to enhance the travel experience with regionally inspired cuisine, award-winning hospitality and over 6,500 entertainment channels available on its ice inflight entertainment system.
The airline also highlighted its Premium Economy service on selected Airbus A380, A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft serving destinations such as the United States, the United Kingdom and China. The cabin features spacious leather seats, premium dining and enhanced comfort.
For premium travellers, Emirates said its First Class Private Suites on selected A380 aircraft offer luxury amenities including private suites, gourmet dining, an exclusive onboard lounge and its signature Shower Spa.
According to the airline, the latest passenger figures reinforce Nigeria’s growing strategic importance within Emirates’ African network as more Nigerians continue to travel internationally for business, education, leisure, religious activities and family engagements.
