The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has mourned the death of veteran Nollywood actor and cultural icon, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
Ogogo died on Sunday, August 23, at the age of 66, after battling stage-four cancer, according to his family. His death was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, on social media, triggering an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans and admirers across the country.
The veteran actor was later buried according to Islamic rites in Ilaro, Ogun State.
In a statement issued by his media office, Obasa described Ogogo as a towering figure in Nollywood whose career reflected discipline, moral values and a strong commitment to preserving Nigerian culture.
The Speaker said Ogogo’s performances inspired generations of Nigerians while promoting Yoruba heritage through storytelling that attracted audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
Obasa said the actor’s death was a significant loss not only to his family and admirers but also to the Nigerian creative industry and the nation at large.
He described Ogogo as a humble and professional actor whose dedication to his craft made him a role model and whose influence extended beyond the screen.
Obasa also commiserated with the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), led by Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin.
According to the Speaker, TAMPAN has lost a respected elder and mentor whose contributions to the theatre and film industry will be greatly missed.
On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Obasa extended his condolences to Ogogo’s family, colleagues and numerous admirers, praying that Almighty Allah grant the late actor eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
