Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has described President Bola Tinubu’s continued stay in power as a choice between life and death for Nigerians.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night, the former Rivers State governor urged citizens to support the ADC’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, whom he said “represents life.”
Amaechi painted a grim picture of the current economic hardship, focusing on soaring transportation costs, rents, and medical expenses. He recounted how staff in his wife’s shop earn ₦70,000 monthly, yet spend as much as ₦65,000 on transport alone. House rents, he claimed, have risen by up to 300 percent in some cases, with one caller informing him of a 100 percent increase on his own rent.
The former minister further criticised the government for raising the minimum wage to ₦70,000 while introducing taxes that, according to him, remove 60 to 70 percent of workers’ earnings. “Is the money in your pocket?” he asked.
Amaechi also linked the high cost of drugs to preventable deaths. “How many people have died because they can’t afford drugs?” he said. “So, when you say they have a choice, they don’t. It’s only one choice, which is life, and Atiku represents life.”
He concluded that Nigerians face no real alternative: “We don’t have two choices but just one to make: the choice to be alive, because Tinubu’s presidency is the choice of death.”
