Senator Gbenga Daniel has been named Deputy Zonal Co-ordinator I for the APC’s South-West Contact and Mobilisation Directorate ahead of the 2027 elections

Gbenga Daniel Appointed APC South-West Mobilisation Co-ordinator for Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign

Otunba Senator Gbenga Daniel has been appointed Deputy Zonal Co-ordinator I for the South-West in the Contact and Mobilisation Directorate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, placing the former Ogun State governor in a key position ahead of the next presidential election.

The appointment is part of the party’s strategy to strengthen grassroots engagement and voter mobilisation across the region as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeks re-election in 2027.

Political watchers have described Daniel’s appointment as “a round peg in a round hole”, citing his experience in governance, legislative affairs, political organisation and community development.

The Contact and Mobilisation Directorate is tasked with engaging voters, encouraging eligible citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and promoting participation in the electoral process. The directorate’s South-West team includes Niyi Adebayo as Zonal Co-ordinator, Daniel and former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni as Deputy Zonal Co-ordinators I and II respectively, while former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode serves as Zonal Secretary.

Daniel is expected to draw on his political network and experience to support the party’s mobilisation efforts across the six states of the South-West, with particular attention to communities and eligible voters outside established party structures.

The campaign’s stated target, according to the account of his assignment, is to secure at least one million votes in each senatorial district across the region. The figure represents a campaign objective rather than a guaranteed electoral outcome.

Daniel brings substantial political experience to the assignment. He governed Ogun State from May 29, 2003, to May 29, 2011, before returning to national politics as a senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District. He also served as Director-General of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Council in 2019 and contested for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2020. He currently chairs the Senate Committee on Navy.

Beyond elective office, Daniel has maintained involvement in humanitarian and community development initiatives through the Gateway Front Foundation, a non-governmental organisation established in 2001. The foundation has provided support to communities across the South-West, according to the information accompanying his appointment.

The organisation is also conducting a free medical outreach expected to benefit more than 15,000 people, including through major and minor surgical procedures.

Daniel is further associated with the BATOGD Movement, which has introduced empowerment programmes aimed at helping beneficiaries improve their livelihoods.

Supporters of the senator argue that his combination of executive experience, legislative responsibilities, campaign management and community engagement positions him to contribute to the APC’s mobilisation strategy. They also point to his longstanding humanitarian activities as an asset in building relationships with communities across the region.

His appointment comes as political parties begin organising their structures and strengthening their networks ahead of the 2027 general election. For the APC, the effectiveness of the South-West mobilisation team will depend on its ability to translate political organisation and grassroots engagement into voter participation at the polls.
