Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has revealed the intense 13-year battle he faced with smoking and how he ultimately quit through conscious effort.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast with Banky W and Aproko Doctor, Ebuka shared that his smoking habit began as early as junior secondary school. By the time he reached university, his consumption had soared to two packs of cigarettes daily.
“I started smoking in JSS 3 and continued for 13 years. In university, I was doing about two packs a day,” he admitted.
Ebuka attributed his success in quitting to intentional, mindful steps rather than chance.
During the discussion, Banky W shared a personal struggle of his own, describing how he developed a pornography addiction while attempting to curb promiscuity. He explained that the addiction initially seemed like a safer alternative but ultimately replaced one harmful habit with another.
Ebuka reflected on this pattern, noting that many people trade one addiction for another when trying to escape the original habit. Aproko Doctor provided context on the psychology behind such behaviors, highlighting that destructive habits often emerge as coping mechanisms to avoid pain and seek pleasure.
The trio emphasized that self-awareness and self-regulation are critical tools for recognizing and overcoming negative addictions.
