The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party and the running mate to the late Abubakar Audu in the 2015 governorship election in the state, Mr. James Faleke, have called for the resignation of the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, following his indictment by a panel of the Independent National Electoral Commission investigating him for double registration.
The commission had on Thursday approved the immediate sack of two of its officials and the compulsory retirement of another electoral official for their alleged role in the governor’s double registration.
The electoral body, however, stated that it could not take any action against the governor as he still enjoyed immunity by virtue of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.
Reacting to the development, the PDP said it had been vindicated that Bello acted illegally.
The state’s PDP Publicity Secretary, Bode Ogunmola, said in a statement, “Double registration is an offence under our laws and we are happy that INEC is doing the needful now. The governor doesn’t know the law and unfortunately, he has surrounded himself with an amateur. If not, his Attorney General should have been able to advise him that double registration is an offence.”
