Former Ogun State First Lady, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, is mourning the loss of her mother, Chief Mrs. Sabainah Ibironke Opawole (née Osoba), whose death has thrown the Opawole and Daniel families into grief.
Chief Mrs. Opawole passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the age of 93 after a brief illness. Her death has attracted an outpouring of condolences from family members, friends, associates, and well-wishers across Ogun State and beyond, many of whom have described her as a woman whose life reflected unwavering faith, compassion, and quiet strength.
Born on April 23, 1933, Chief Mrs. Opawole came from a distinguished lineage that combined royal heritage and Christian ministry. Her mother, Princess Mariam Ladigbolu, belonged to the renowned Ladigbolu royal family of the Oyo Kingdom, while her father, the late Rev. O. Osoba, was a respected clergyman from Olodo Village in Abeokuta. Throughout her lifetime, she remained a devoted member of the Baptist faith and was widely admired for her steadfast commitment to God, family, and community.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including her daughter, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, the former First Lady of Ogun State and wife of Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of the state.
In a statement, the family described the late matriarch as a woman who lived a life of grace, humility, resilience, and enduring faith, virtues that continued to define her until her peaceful passing.
While expressing gratitude for the numerous messages of sympathy received since her death, the family appealed for continued prayers and understanding during this difficult period. Funeral arrangements, they added, will be announced in due course.
