Ijebu-Remo State creation gains momentum as royal fathers and Ijebuland leaders back the proposal and Ijebu-Ode as the capital
Ijebu-Remo State Creation: Gbenga Daniel Gains Major Backing as Royal Fathers Rally Behind New State Bid
The campaign for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State has received a major boost following a meeting of traditional rulers and prominent leaders from across Ijebuland, who declared their support for the proposed state and its capital, Ijebu-Ode.
The meeting, convened by Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District and Chairman of the Implementation Committee on the Creation of a New State out of the Old Ijebu Province, was held at the Palace of the Awujale in Ijebu-Ode.
The gathering was led by the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, His Royal Majesty Oba Lawrence Adebajo, and brought together the Ogbeni-Oja of Ijebuland and Chairman of the Awujale Interregnum Council, Olorogun Sonny Kuku, as well as the Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, the Dagburewe of Idowa and other members of the Ijebu Traditional Council.
Former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Senator Adegbenga Kaka, and Chief Funlola Okunowo were also among those who attended the meeting.
At the end of the deliberations, the royal fathers declared their full support for the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, with Ijebu-Ode as its capital. The stakeholders also resolved to work collectively towards the actualisation of the proposed state, emphasising the need for unity, coordination and sustained engagement among traditional institutions and community leaders.
The latest development comes after months of efforts by Senator Daniel to advance the state creation campaign. He sponsored the Ijebu-Remo State creation bill in the Senate in November 2024, with the proposal subsequently passing first reading.
Daniel later announced a consensus on the name “Ijebu-Remo” following its endorsement by the Remo Traditional Council.
In January 2026, the senator also stressed that unity of purpose among the nine local government areas that made up the old Ijebu Province would be critical to the success of the state creation bid.
With 75 senators now reported to support the proposal, a figure said to be above the constitutional threshold required for the process, the campaign for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State has entered a crucial phase.
The latest endorsement by traditional rulers and key stakeholders across Ijebuland is expected to strengthen the push for the proposed state as efforts continue to secure wider political and institutional backing.
