June 12 Celebration: Obasa Reaffirms Faith in Democracy, Seeks Reconciliation Within APC

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has reaffirmed his confidence in Nigeria’s democratic journey and expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as the nation marks Democracy Day.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by his Special Adviser on Research, Media and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo, Obasa described June 12 as a historic milestone that reflects the resilience of Nigerians and their commitment to democratic governance.

The Speaker congratulated Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, as well as President Tinubu, on the occasion of Democracy Day, noting that the annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes in the struggle for freedom, justice and popular sovereignty.

“Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice and democratic values,” Obasa said.

He stressed that 27 years into the Fourth Republic, democracy remains the most viable path to national development, economic growth and individual prosperity.

Obasa also commended President Tinubu’s leadership, stating that his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle continues to shape his efforts in addressing economic challenges and implementing key reforms.

According to the Speaker, the Renewed Hope Agenda is helping to drive economic recovery, improve governance and strengthen national unity.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, our nation continues to make steady strides towards economic renewal, improved governance and national unity,” he stated.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the administration’s policies, adding that the reforms are aimed at creating a stronger economy, expanding opportunities and ensuring that the benefits of democracy reach all parts of the country.

Addressing recent tensions arising from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, particularly in Lagos State, Obasa called on party members to embrace reconciliation and peaceful engagement.

The APC primaries had triggered protests in some areas over allegations of candidate imposition and irregularities.

“Party primaries are contests, not wars,” Obasa said, urging party stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, mutual respect and internal cohesion.

He maintained that resolving differences through democratic means would strengthen the party and enhance its capacity to deliver effective governance.

The Speaker further noted that a united APC would be better positioned to consolidate democratic gains and sustain national progress.

“Our focus must remain on the bigger picture, which is consolidating power in 2027 to continue the transformative work President Tinubu has begun,” he added.
