Respected Ogun State businessman and political figure, Hon. Kola Salako, has been elected Vice President of the esteemed Abeokuta Sports Club, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career in public and community service, writes Lukman Omikunle.

Salako’s victory in the club’s leadership election is widely seen as a resounding vote of confidence in his integrity, leadership acumen, and enduring commitment to grassroots development.

Known for his work as a mobilizer and advocate for community progress, his influence continues to resonate across governance, civic engagement, and social development.

Commenting on the development, Dr. Oyede Saheed Adesunkanmi—a community advocate and close associate of Salako—hailed the election as timely and well-deserved.

Founded in 1904, the Abeokuta Sports Club began as a relaxation spot for members of the West African Command Headquarters. Over the years, it expanded to include a golf course, cricket pitch, tennis court, and billiards room.

The club, known as the oldest in West Africa, has won numerous trophies and participated in various sports, including golf, shooting, and cricket, since the early thirties.

Historical records indicate that the land was leased to the club on March 23, 1932, with evidence of competitions with other clubs dating back to 1929. Read More
