Lagos LP youth leader alleges threat to life

Lawal said before, during and after the election, even up till lately, he has been subjected to different forms of harassment, intimidation and all forms of humiliation

A youth leader of the Labour Party (LP) in Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos State, Mr. Akeem Lawal, has cried for help from security agents and Nigerians over alleged threat to his life by some politicians and political thugs for not supporting the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, during the 2023 General Election.

Lawal was engaged in grassroot mobilisation which saw the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi win the presidential election in Alimosho Local Government area and the entire Lagos State.

Recall this particular LG (Alimosho), the largest Local Government Area in Lagos State, was the main stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC),

Mr Obi scored 71,327 votes in Alimosho with 11 wards and 1,545 polling units to emerge the election winner in the local government.

Mr Tinubu of the APC, scored 62,909, followed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party with 8201.

The results show that they recorded 15,8209 total vote cast, out of which 147,870 were valid and 10,339 rejected.

In the final result of the election at state level, Obi, of the Labour Party, got 582,454 votes, just ahead of former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu, who got 572,606 votes for the governing APC.

Obi’s campaign attracted young and urban voters fed up with corrupt traditional politics. One of such is Lawal, who said he has been attacked several times and has been receiving life-threatening messages from unknown persons due to his decision to support the Labour Party during the last general election.

Lawal said before, during and after the election, even up till lately, he has been subjected to different forms of harassment, intimidation and all forms of humiliation, even at places where he deserved honour and respect. Lawal alleged that he was asked to back down on his support and campaign for the opposition party in the area and promised money and other things.

In a chat with our Correspondent, he said, “If we claim we are one united Nigeria, it should reflect in our character and attitude, and so the Igbo also should be given the opportunity to rule Nigeria.

“My life is under threat ever since I started campaigning for Labour Party in my Constituency. They were surprised that we could make this party a force to be reckoned with in the election. They didn’t expect that Labour Party could defeat them and emerge victorious in my Constituency and Lagos State in general at the presidential election.

“Immediately after the announcement of the presidential result, my house was attacked and my properties destroyed by political thugs of the ruling party.

“I want the whole world to know what is happening, that there are threats to my life and my family. And because of the ongoing insecurity in the country, one will not want to take chances,” he said.

“My phones have been inundated with calls from hidden private numbers threatening me and my family.

“They are now aware of what the party is capable of doing and they are plotting to assassinate me before the next general election in 2027. They plan to arrest me and remand me in prison and incarcerate me as a means to shut me up if the assassination attempt fails,” he said.
