Moves to Curb Impunity Advance as Bill to Remove Immunity for VP, Govs Scales Second Reading

The bill aimed at removing the immunity granted to the Vice President, State Governors, and their deputies is one of the forty-two constitutional amendment bills that successfully passed their second reading in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

This initiative seeks to reduce corruption, eliminate impunity, and enhance accountability in public office by lifting the immunity associated with these elected positions.

This development follows the successful passage of thirty-nine constitutional amendment bills during the second reading in the House on Tuesday.

– A bill to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, which seeks to qualify the immunity currently granted to the President and to remove immunity for the Vice President, State Governors, and their deputies to combat corruption and promote accountability in public office.

– A bill to amend the Constitution to separate the roles of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Attorney-General of individual states from the positions of Minister of Justice at the federal level and Commissioner for Justice at the state level.

– A bill to amend the Constitution to grant citizenship rights to the spouses of Nigerian women, as well as to establish a minimum number of youths and women eligible for appointment to specific offices.

Other bills include proposals to create Ijebu State, Ife-Ijesa State, Tiga State, Orlu State, and Etiti State.
