Communication and business activities were disrupted in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Thursday following a major outage on the MTN network that left subscribers without voice, SMS and internet services for several hours.
The disruption reportedly affected parts of the state capital, with subscribers unable to make or receive calls, send text messages or access WhatsApp and other internet-based services through the network.
According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria, attempts by subscribers in affected areas to make calls or use mobile data were unsuccessful, leaving residents unable to communicate with relatives, business associates and customers.
The outage also disrupted commercial activities, particularly for business owners who rely heavily on telecommunications services to communicate with customers and complete daily transactions.
A spare parts dealer, Uche Alexander, described the prolonged disruption as unfortunate, saying the outage had already caused significant financial losses to his business.
“For the past three hours, I have been finding it difficult to communicate with my business partners, and that has made me lose millions of naira,” he was quoted as saying.
Alexander called on MTN management to urgently investigate the cause of the disruption and restore services to subscribers in Jalingo and other affected areas of Taraba State.
Another resident, Paulina Kamuel, expressed concern over the impact of the outage on residents and businesses that depend on mobile telecommunications for their daily operations.
“Majority of the people in Jalingo and the state as a whole rely on MTN, and I can tell you that a lot of businesses have been crippled in the past three or four hours that the network has disappeared,” she said.
The disruption came as mobile telecommunications services continue to play a critical role in commercial transactions, banking, social communication and access to online platforms.
As of the time of filing the report, the specific cause of the Jalingo outage had not been established, while affected subscribers waited for services to be restored.
The incident has renewed concerns among residents over the reliability of telecommunications infrastructure and the need for network providers to communicate promptly with customers whenever major service disruptions occur.
