Dapo Abiodun: A Desperate Governor Scrambling to Salvage a Tarnished Reputation Ahead of 2027

Dapo Abiodun: A Desperate Governor Scrambling to Salvage a Tarnished Reputation Ahead of 2027

Governor Dapo Abiodun has become a classic example of a desperate Nigerian politician who, having failed to inspire with leadership or leave behind a memorable legacy, is now resorting to last-minute patronage and panic appointments in a bid to curry favour from the very electorate he sidelined for over six years.

With the countdown to the end of his lackluster tenure ticking fast and whispers of a 2027 senatorial ambition growing louder, the Ogun State governor is clearly in political survival mode.

In a move widely seen as an attempt to reposition himself and buy loyalty within his party, Abiodun on Monday announced the appointment of eleven new Senior Special Assistants, one Special Assistant, and a whopping twenty-seven liaison officers — a move that has triggered outrage and confusion across the state.

The appointments, coming just five weeks after he marked six years in office, were contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi.

The statement, released from Abeokuta, did little to explain why the governor, who has consistently downplayed the importance of grassroots political inclusion, suddenly feels the need to “reward” party loyalists with appointments.

Analysts believe the appointments are not acts of governance, but a calculated political move aimed at pacifying aggrieved party members and consolidating support ahead of a senatorial bid — a strategy many describe as both belated and shallow.

“For six years, Dapo Abiodun ran a government that was aloof and disconnected from the realities of the people,” said a political commentator in Ijebu Ode. “Now, with nothing tangible to show as a legacy project, he’s dishing out appointments like freebies at a market square. It’s shameful.”

Residents across Ogun State are openly questioning the motive behind the sudden rush. Many see it as an insult to their intelligence and a clear indication that the governor is more interested in personal ambition than meaningful governance.

“What happened to these appointments in 2019? Or 2020? Or 2021 when party members cried out for inclusion?” asked a disgruntled APC youth leader in Yewa. “Dapo Abiodun ignored everyone for years, and now he wants to sprinkle titles around because he’s scared of what comes after 2027.”

Even within the ruling APC, murmurs of discontent continue to swell, with insiders confirming that the governor is under intense pressure to appease factions he once alienated.

More troubling for many indigenes is the glaring absence of any signature development project directly traceable to the governor’s administration. While his predecessors are still celebrated for impactful policies and capital projects, Dapo Abiodun, many say, will be remembered for missed opportunities and a glaring failure to lead with vision.

“The roads he takes credit for were started by previous administrations. His only visible legacy is a long list of government press releases and photo ops,” said Mrs. Ronke Alade, a civil servant in Abeokuta. “And now, these panic appointments — they are not for us, they’re for his future.”

With two years left in his tenure, the governor’s recent moves reek more of desperation than leadership. As he scrambles to rewrite his political narrative, it remains to be seen whether Ogun people — long disillusioned and ignored — will be swayed by his sudden largesse, or see through the thinly veiled bid to secure a soft landing in 2027.

For now, the verdict on the streets is clear: Dapo Abiodun is running out of time — and relevance.

Lagos Named World’s Fastest-Growing Emerging Tech Hub in 2025 — Statisense Report

0

Lagos has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing emerging technology ecosystem in 2025, according to a new report by renowned data analytics firm, Statisense. The ranking places Nigeria’s commercial capital ahead of global contenders including Istanbul, Pune, Mumbai, and Riyadh.

The Statisense report, published on social platform X, evaluated cities based on metrics such as enterprise value, unicorn count, funding growth, GDP per capita, and cost of living. Other cities rounding out the top 10 include Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Johannesburg, Chennai, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Additional emerging tech hubs named in the report include Kyiv, Mexico City, Vilnius, Jakarta, Bengaluru, Zagreb, Dhaka, Bangkok, Santiago de Chile, and Kampala.

Reacting to the news, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attributed the city’s rise to deliberate government policies and sustained investment in innovation and digital infrastructure.

Speaking at the Art of Technology Lagos 6.0 event on Monday, themed “Artificial Intelligence and the Lagos Digital Economy,” the governor, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, highlighted Lagos’s proactive role in shaping Africa’s tech future.

“Through deliberate policies and investments, we have created an enabling environment that fosters innovation and positioned Lagos as a global player in the technology value chain. The achievements reflect the ingenuity of our people and our unwavering commitment to innovation. But we must continue to build on this foundation to secure our position as a leader in the global tech ecosystem,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He also noted that startups based in Lagos raised over $1.2 billion in 2023, accounting for a remarkable 75% of all startup investments in Nigeria.

Delivering the keynote address at the event, Terrens Wu, Managing Director, Enterprise Business Group at Huawei Technologies, spoke on the evolution of global digital infrastructure and the growing dominance of artificial intelligence.

“From the first growth curve of the informatization age, human society has achieved ubiquitous interconnection, connecting a large number of users and causing a traffic explosion. This has accelerated the demand for digital transformation and spawned a second growth curve with 5G and cloud as the main engines,” Wu explained.

He said the third growth wave—defined by comprehensive intelligence—is now unfolding, driven by an exponential surge in AI computing needs.

“By the end of this year, we expect that the demand for AI computing power may exceed the demand for general computing power. Building an elastic and efficient multi-calculation infrastructure with optimal AI computing power, which is about building an AI-native cloud infrastructure, is the key to AI development,” Wu added.

The recognition of Lagos as the world’s leading emerging tech hub marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s digital economy and solidifies the city’s position as a powerhouse for innovation on the African continent and beyond.

Nigeria Customs Launches Airport Campaign to Combat Money Laundering, Targets Airline Compliance

0

In a strategic move to reinforce Nigeria’s anti-money laundering regime, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has extended its enforcement campaign to the aviation sector with a sensitisation session for international airline operators at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on July 5, 2025.

The exercise, held in collaboration with other law enforcement and regulatory bodies, was designed to educate airline personnel on their critical role in enforcing Nigeria’s currency declaration laws, especially regarding inbound and outbound passengers.

Airline operators were urged to support compliance through inflight announcements, distribution of declaration forms, and cooperation during customs procedures. The Customs Service reiterated that any passenger carrying over $10,000 or its equivalent must declare the funds to avoid seizure, investigation, or prosecution under Nigeria’s anti-money laundering legislation.

Key aspects of the sensitisation also included the mandatory electronic submission of flight manifests (e-Manifests) ahead of arrival. These manifests are expected to contain detailed passenger information—names, countries of origin and destination, and flight numbers—to aid in targeted customs risk assessments and improved surveillance.

Leading the initiative was Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Salihu Mas’ud, who heads the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Unit. He commended the cooperation of airline operators and outlined the operational structures already in place to support compliance.

“What we have achieved so far is to be able to sensitise them. We’ve gone round to check all the points. We have dedicated search rooms for secondary searches. There are dedicated posts for currency declarations, and they are in place. Announcements are also being made on the Public Address System. We have also gotten the commitment of the airline operators to ensure that these announcements are also being made on board their flights,” Mas’ud said.

He added that the new compliance measures would enhance border security and increase the detection and prosecution of violators.

“We expect higher compliance, and it will strengthen our enforcement mechanism. It also ensures that defaulters and violators of currency declarations are detected promptly and forwarded for necessary investigation and prosecution,” he stated.

The Customs Service stressed that this proactive engagement demonstrates the importance of inter-agency collaboration in combating financial crimes, smuggling, and terrorism financing. With illicit financial flows posing a growing threat to national security, officials reaffirmed that ongoing partnerships with airlines, airport authorities, and intelligence agencies remain essential to protecting Nigeria’s borders.

“No Pay, No Work”: ASUU Set For Nationwide Strike Over Delayed June Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members across Nigeria to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike over the delayed payment of their June 2025 salaries.

The industrial action, which began this week, stems from a resolution by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) to implement a strict “No Pay, No Work” stance whenever salaries are not paid within the first three days of a new month.

ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development in Abuja, stating that the decision was driven by the continued financial hardship lecturers face due to recurring salary delays.

“Our members are experiencing hardship. Salaries are often delayed by a week or more. At NEC, we agreed that if salaries are not paid within three days of a new month, members should withdraw their services,” Piwuna said.

He attributed the persistent delays not to technical challenges with the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS)—the platform recently adopted for university payrolls—but to what he described as “deliberate negligence” by the Office of the Accountant General.

“When funds are eventually released, there are no complaints of underpayment or technical failure. The system works; it’s the handlers who are stalling. We believe this delay is intentional,” he added.

Professor Piwuna also raised concerns about the lingering issue of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), revealing that the federal government still owes N10 billion of the previously promised N50 billion.

“We expect the remaining N10 billion to be paid without further delay to prevent another round of agitation,” he cautioned.

In compliance with the national directive, ASUU branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already downed tools.
Dr. Jurbe Molwus, ASUU Chairman at the University of Jos, confirmed the commencement of the strike, stating that a monitoring team has been deployed to ensure full compliance across departments.

“Lecturers have withdrawn their services due to the unpaid June salaries, in line with the NEC resolution,” Molwus said, warning that continued inaction from the government would result in sustained industrial unrest.

At the University of Abuja, ASUU members also commenced strike action on Monday. While the branch chairman, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, was unavailable for comment, the university’s spokesperson, Dr. Habib Yakoob, declined to speak on the issue, referring journalists to the ASUU leadership.

ASUU has long maintained that the timely payment of salaries is not only a contractual obligation but critical to ensuring stability and productivity within the nation’s tertiary education system. The current strike adds to a growing list of confrontations between the academic union and the federal government over lecturers’ welfare and institutional funding.

“A Significant Loss” – Tinubu On Passing Of Olubadan

PRESS RELEASE

President Bola Tinubu has received with deep shock the news of the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away at the age of 90.

The President extends his heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the government, and people of Oyo State, as well as the entire Ibadanland, on the loss of a revered traditional ruler, a statesman, and a symbol of peace, wisdom, and continuity.

President Tinubu mourns the Olubadan and celebrates his remarkable life of service to his people, the state, and the nation.

President Tinubu describes the late monarch as a highly accomplished man of peace, a public servant, a former military officer and a royal father whose life embodies the highest ideals of leadership, learning, and service.

“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was not only a custodian of Ibadan’s rich history and culture but also a man of intellect and principle whose contributions extended beyond the palace into education, governance, the military and national development. His passing is a significant loss to Ibadanland and the nation.

“Just last week, I received an invitation from the late Olubadan to his 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations. Shockingly, his death came days before the anniversary. He will be remembered for upholding the honour and prestige of his highly revered stool,” the President says.

President Tinubu lauds Oba Olakulehin’s legacy as one that bridged tradition and modernity, adding that his wisdom and moral authority served as a stabilising force in Ibadanland and the wider Yoruba nation.

The President prays for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urges the people of Ibadan to take solace in his life and the values he embodied.

Dangote Holds the Key to Lower Inflation – Economic Think Tank

Dangote Holds the Key to Lower Inflation – Economic Think Tank

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has been identified as crucial to reducing inflation in Nigeria, according to a report by the Financial Derivatives Company (FDC) Limited think tank.

In its recently published Lagos Business School (LBS) Executive Breakfast Presentation for July, the think tank noted that Dangote Refinery has become the key mechanism for reducing petrol prices and lowering transport fares.

The report, presented by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FDC, Bismarck Rewane, added that Dangote’s uniform pricing policy and credit facilities to marketers represent a game changer that will revolutionise Nigeria’s downstream oil sector by cutting logistics costs.

“Dangote’s uniform pricing and credit to marketers is a game changer and a catalyst for more private sector investment. The initiative is set to revolutionize Nigeria’s oil downstream business by cutting logistics costs and by spending over N1.7 trillion annually,” it stated, emphasising that Dangote Refinery’s fuel distribution strategy, which involves deploying 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks nationwide, will lower pump prices, curb inflation, and support over 42 million MSMEs.

“With 4,000 CNG-powered trucks delivering refined products directly to the doorsteps of end-users, the move will lower pump prices, curb inflation, and support over 42 million MSMEs.”

The report stressed that the Nigerian economy is experiencing a classic oil price paradox: when global oil prices rise, the government benefits financially and the naira strengthens, yet there is little advantage for the average person. Conversely, when oil prices fall, consumers rejoice at lower petrol prices while the government suffers financially.

On the international front, the report observed that the global economy has swung from exaggerated fears of market volatility and uncertainty to the irrational exuberance of momentum traders and speculators, who are profiting by exploiting the anxieties of those fixated on maintaining the status quo.

Yayi Wants the Crown, But OGD Already Built the Kingdom | By Victor Ojelabi

Yayi Wants the Crown, But OGD Already Built the Kingdom | By Victor Ojelabi

Is it fair to compare a man preparing for a governorship race with another who already walked that path and left behind footprints?

Lately, people have been drawing comparisons between Senator Gbenga Daniel and Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly called Yayi.

On the surface, it might look like harmless political talk, but let’s not lie to ourselves; it smells more like calculated strategy than honest analysis.

Let’s call things what they are.

Senator Yayi is not new in politics.

Sen. Solomon Adeola

He currently represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, and he has made it clear that he wants to run for governor in 2027.

Of course, once someone declares that kind of ambition, they start showing face more often; commissioning boreholes here, doing empowerment there, offering grants, and making promises.

It’s all part of the game, and we get it. But let’s not act like it’s coming from pure generosity. There’s a clear motive; the governor’s seat.

And this is where the comparison begins to wobble.

Trying to place OGD and Yayi on the same level as if they’re playing the same match or chasing the same legacy? That’s not just off; it’s totally unfair.

When Otunba Gbenga Daniel became governor, Ogun State was struggling, more civil service than development. But by the time he left, the story had changed.

He didn’t just talk change; he made it happen.

He didn’t wait for applause or headlines; he just kept working, brick by brick, road by road.

He gave Ogunstate TASUED; the first University of Education in Nigeria.

He moved Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) to its permanent site.

He built ICT polytechnics where no one was looking and set up vocational centers that gave young people real-life skills, not just certificates.

Education under OGD wasn’t noise; it was action.

Then there’s infrastructure.

He constructed over 2,000km of roads, built stadiums in places like Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, and Ilaro.

He brought rural electrification, hosted the National Sports Festival, and even attracted the FIFA U-17 World Cup to Ogun.

While others were still trying to find their feet, he was already planting the future.

He didn’t stop there. He started the Olokola Deep Seaport project, established Free Trade Zones, and positioned Ogun as an industrial base.

Many of the factories and companies that came later? They didn’t just fall from the sky. They came because of the groundwork OGD laid years ago.

And after leaving office, did he disappear? No.

Through his foundation, he kept helping people quietly; no cameras, no press release, just genuine support where it was needed. Real empowerment, not campaign stunts.

As a senator today, he’s still not slowing down.

He brought a Federal College of Aviation to Ilara-Remo, helped bring a naval base to Ogun Waterside, sank boreholes, renovated schools, gave out interest-free loans, provided medical outreach, and supported farmers.

All of this, not for clout, but because service is in his DNA.

OGD is not fighting for relevance.

He’s not looking for likes or retweets. He’s just continuing what he started, with focus, with results, and with proof.

So, before anyone starts pairing him with people whose political energy only kicked in when 2027 came into view, let’s ask ourselves a few honest questions:

Where were they when Ogun was being rebuilt?

Where were they when schools had no roofs, when roads were nightmares, and when Ogun was just a name on the map?

Gbenga Daniel is not in the race to prove anything. His work already speaks for him.

He’s not just a former governor or a sitting senator; he is a builder of futures, a man whose legacy continues to shine.

Those who had the privilege of knowing her speak of a woman whose life was rooted in values—compassion, responsibility, integrity, and communal upliftment. Her legacy, they say, is not only written in family records, but etched deeply in the hearts of those she impacted.

“We celebrate Mama Adebukanla Saudi Abudu (née Adesoye) not just for the years she lived, but for the lives she touched. She was a gift to us all, and though she is no longer with us physically, her legacy lives on—in our stories, in our actions, and in the values she passed on.”

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members and well-wishers who continue to be inspired by her life of service.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.

May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Read More
