Forex Inflows Soar to Highest Level in Six Years, Boosts Investor Confidence

Nigeria’s domestic foreign exchange inflows have hit their highest level in six years, reflecting growing investor confidence and a steady expansion in business activities across key sectors. This is according to the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and FMDQ.

In May 2025, inflows from domestic sources into the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) soared to $4.96 billion, a 64.2% increase from April’s $3.02 billion. This figure represents the highest domestic forex inflow since 2019, driven largely by the private sector, with significantly reduced dependence on the CBN.

According to data from FMDQ, total inflows into the NFEM rose by 62% to $5.96 billion in May 2025, up from $3.67 billion the previous month. Domestic sources contributed 83.2% of total inflows, while foreign sources accounted for the remaining 16.8%, reaching $997.60 million, the highest in three months.

The bulk of the domestic inflows came from exporters and importers, whose contributions jumped to $3.11 billion from $655.7 million. Non-bank corporates saw a modest rise from $1 billion to $1.11 billion, while individual inflows skyrocketed from $15.1 million to $91.4 million — signaling a renewed confidence in Nigeria’s currency market.

Interestingly, the CBN’s own contribution fell sharply, dropping by more than half from $1.35 billion in April to $649.80 million in May — highlighting a growing shift toward market-driven forex inflows.

The CBN’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for May 2025 reaffirmed the economy’s resilience, with the composite PMI staying above the 50-point threshold for the sixth consecutive month, reflecting continued expansion.

The PMI for May stood at 52.1 points, only slightly down from 52.2 in April. Sectoral performances remained strong: Agriculture: 53.4 (vs. 53.8 in April), Industry: 51.6 (vs. 51.8) and Services: 51.7 (vs. 51.8)

Foreign inflows also surged, increasing by 51.7% to $997.60 million. A closer look reveals that foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) contributed significantly, with inflows climbing by 61.3% to $880.80 million. Inflows from foreign corporates grew by 10% to $83.9 million, while foreign direct investment (FDI) dipped slightly by 6.3% to $32.9 million.

Analysts at Cordros Capital linked the surge in inflows and sustained business expansion to a more optimistic macroeconomic environment.

“Looking ahead, we expect sustained expansion in private sector activity, underpinned by improving macroeconomic fundamentals such as a more stable naira and moderating inflation,” the analysts noted.

“Nonetheless, tight financial conditions remain a potential headwind to broader economic performance in the near term.”

They warned, however, that lingering global trade uncertainties could limit the momentum of foreign inflows, posing risks to forex liquidity.

Business leaders have also weighed in, praising the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reforms that have reignited investor confidence and sparked positive economic momentum.

Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, lauded the reforms, particularly in forex unification and energy deregulation, saying, “Your leadership has been both decisive and reassuring. Your actions have reignited hope for a prosperous Nigeria of today and of the future.”

“From the very start of the administration, Your Excellency has worked tirelessly to foster an enabling environment for private sector-led growth,” Dangote said.

He highlighted initiatives such as fuel subsidy removal, naira exchange rate unification, tax reform, and the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, adding that the reformed tax system will compel many to “run and come to Aso Rock in gratitude.”

BUA Group Chairman, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, also echoed optimism: “Under your leadership, we have witnessed real and rapid progress,” he said, citing accelerated infrastructure rollout as proof of the government’s commitment to innovation and national development.

Two of the world’s leading credit rating agencies — Moody’s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings — have responded positively to Nigeria’s reform trajectory.

Moody’s recently upgraded Nigeria’s sovereign credit rating from Caa1 to B3, citing “a more resilient fiscal position, stronger external accounts, and the government’s demonstrated commitment to macroeconomic and structural reforms.” The outlook was adjusted from “positive” to “stable.”

Fitch followed suit by upgrading Nigeria from “B-” to “B”, noting improved policy coherence, reduced economic distortions, and a renewed commitment to orthodox policies.

“The upgrade reflects increased confidence in the government’s broad commitment to policy reforms implemented since its move to orthodox economic policies in June 2023,” Fitch stated in its April 2025 report. Read More

Ojude Oba 2025: Balogun Adesoye Dynasty’s Spectacular Horse Ride with Ibrahim Chatta Sparks Loudest Ovation at Festival

The 2025 Ojude Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode was a dazzling showcase of tradition, royalty, and pageantry — but it was the electrifying entrance of the Balogun Adesoye Dynasty, flanked by celebrated Nollywood actor Ibrahim Chatta, that stole the show and earned the loudest ovation of the day.

The vibrant celebration, held on Sunday, June 8, drew an array of distinguished guests from across the country, including Governor Dapo Abiodun, Olori Adetona, the Minister of Culture, Arts, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, among other notable dignitaries.

This year’s event, which brought together approximately 90 Regberegbe groups and over 20 distinguished horse-riding families, was a visual feast of heritage.

However, the moment that truly captivated the crowd came when Osi Balogun Adegboyega Daud Adesoye, leading the Adesoye family’s procession, arrived in grand style — accompanied by the charismatic Nollywood great, Ibrahim Chatta on horseback.

In a poetic performance rooted deeply in Yoruba tradition, Chatta rendered the Adesoye family’s oríkì (panegyric) with a mastery that resonated powerfully among the guests, including the representatives of Awujale of Ijebuland, who was conspicuously absent at the event, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the Honourable Minister for Arts and Culture.

The moment blended heritage, celebrity, and cultural pride — a true fusion of old and new Nigeria.

The Adesoye Dynasty wasn’t alone in showcasing its prestige. Other prominent horse-riding families graced the festival arena, including the Balogun Kuku, Oreagba, Balogun Odunuga, Balogun Gamugasa, Balogun Shote Lovely, and Balogun Alausa families — all paying homage to the throne of Awujale of Ijebuland in regal splendor.

Speaking exclusively to newsheadline247 at the historic Balogun Fasasi Adesoye mansion in Oke-Ijasi, Ijebu Ode, the family’s lead horse rider, Osi Balogun Adegboyega Daud Adesoye, beamed with pride.

“It’s a feeling of deep fulfillment and pure joy,” he said. “Everything we poured into our preparations paid off beautifully. Seeing our family’s vibrant performance at the festival ground was truly rewarding.

“As children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the late Balogun Fasasi Adesoye Onasanya, we’re all united in happiness. This year’s Ojude Oba brought our family even closer together — before, during, and after the event.

“We’ve definitely raised the bar, and I can confidently say — this is only the beginning. From here, it only gets better.”

Nollywood star Ibrahim Chatta, who played a major role in the Adesoye family’s standout parade, also shared his heartfelt reflections in a private conversation with newsheadline247.

“This is one of the proudest moments of my life,” Chatta said. “Being part of the Ojude Oba festival — right here with the Ijebu people — was beyond anything I imagined. The love I received, the warmth, the cheers… I felt it deeply. It was overwhelming in the most beautiful way.”

Speaking passionately, he continued, “Ojude Oba is more than a festival — it’s a celebration of unity, heritage, and pride. For over a century, it has stood as a symbol of the Ijebu people’s cultural strength, and I’m incredibly honored to be part of that legacy.”

This year’s Ojude Oba didn’t just follow tradition — it elevated it. With its vibrant cultural displays, illustrious guests, and a new wave of artistic involvement, the festival cemented its place as a cultural cornerstone, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of the Ijebu people and beyond. Sen. Gbenga Daniel Urges Faith, Togetherness in Inspirational Eid-el-Kabir Message

As Muslims across Nigeria mark the sacred occasion of Eid-el-Kabir, Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has shared a heartfelt message of hope, unity, and resilience.

In a press statement commemorating the Festival of Sacrifice, Senator Daniel extended warm wishes to Muslim faithful in his constituency and beyond, emphasizing the deeper spiritual meaning behind the celebration.

The former Ogun State Governor reflected on the themes of perseverance, obedience, and faith that define Eid-el-Kabir, drawing parallels between its message and Nigeria’s journey toward a brighter future.

“The celebration of Eid Mubarak is a testimony to the power of endurance, obedience, and penitence,” he said. “Like every tunnel of darkness, there is a light at the end.”

Acknowledging the country’s current economic and social challenges, Senator Daniel called on Nigerians to remain steadfast and united in their efforts to build a prosperous nation. He highlighted the need for collective sacrifice and national solidarity as essential ingredients for progress.

“As we all continue to do our best for a wonderful and prosperous country, I wish all Muslim faithful a wonderful celebration and God’s unending provision. Barka de Sallah,” he added.

Hajj 2025: Nigerian Pilgrims to Begin Return Journey from Saudi Arabia on June 13 — NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced that the return journey of Nigerian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia will officially begin on 13 June 2025.

Chairman of the commission, Professor Abdullahi Usman, made the announcement in Mina on Friday, as Muslims across the globe observed Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice.

Delivering a Sallah message, Prof. Usman extended warm greetings to the Muslim Ummah, particularly those who participated in the Day of Arafat, a pivotal rite of the Hajj pilgrimage.

“As we mark Eid, we bring good news: the return journey for Nigerian pilgrims will begin on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah,” he said.

According to him, the first batch of return flights will include pilgrims from Imo State flying with Air Peace, Bauchi State via Max Air, and those from Kebbi and Sokoto States aboard Flynas.

Prof. Usman urged the pilgrims scheduled to return first to prepare accordingly and prayed for a smooth and safe return for all.

He also reminded Muslim faithful of the deeper spiritual lessons of the Hajj, referencing the sacrifices and unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim and Sayyidatuna Hajara as enduring examples of trust, devotion, and obedience.

NAHCON’s logistics coordination continues as thousands of Nigerian pilgrims prepare to complete their spiritual journey and return home in the coming days.

Eid Al-Adha Message from NAHCON Chairman
By Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman

All praise belongs to Allah, for the privilege of witnessing another eid-al-adha; the celebration of sacrifice. On behalf of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), I heartily congratulate all Muslims on the occasion. We especially congratulate the fortunate pilgrims who witnessed the Day of Arafat. May Allah accept your prayers and sacrifices and those of other Muslims too.

As we celebrate this day, I enjoin our Muslim faithfuls to remember the essence of the Hajj period and to imbibe the lessons contained in the exercise. Remember the trust in Allah that Sayyidatuna Hajara had that brought the existence of Zamzam. Remember the Sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim made in abandoning his family in the desert alone in the care of Allah and how Allah rewarded that obedience with the boisterous town of Makkah. See how the reward of trust in Allah led to surplus blessings in foods and security in a desert land as a rewarding response to Prophet Ibrahim’s supplication. Trust in Allah, obedience to leadership and discipline will make communities and nations prosper.

In celebrating the success of Hajj so far, let me start by appreciating the cooperation and orderly conduct of Nigerian pilgrims throughout this Hajj exercise. Their patience and discipline have been remarkable. This made NAHCON’s job easier.

We in NAHCON also extend our appreciation to the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards. Their support and excellent organization of pilgrims have contributed greatly to the success of the operations.

To our dedicated NAHCON staff, many of whom were serving pilgrims even while in the state of ihram, your sacrifice is noted, and your reward is with Allah.

To our Board Members and all our Ad-hoc staff, we are grateful for your tireless commitment and patience in serving the guests of Allah.

We cannot fail to acknowledge the strong support of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima. Their backing has been instrumental in the smooth running of this year’s Hajj operations.

We also commend the excellent services witnessed in the Mashair: Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. We assure the public that NAHCON is committed to doing even better, with the right cooperation and continued support from all stakeholders.

As we mark Eid, we bring good news: the return journey for Nigerian pilgrims will begin on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. The first flights will include pilgrims from Imo State with Air Peace, Bauchi State with Max Air, and Kebbi and Sokoto States with Flynas. We urge the first batch of pilgrims to be ready for their return trip and pray for a smooth return leg operation for all our pilgrims.

Eid Mubarak once again. May Allah accept our Hajj, our sacrifices, and our prayers.

Laide Bakare Denies Mocking Biola Bayo Over Marriage Crash, Says “I Can Never Shade My Own Sister”

Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has publicly refuted claims that she mocked her colleague, Biola Bayo, following the latter’s recent announcement of her marriage ending.

The controversy began after Bakare posted a video of herself dancing on Instagram, accompanied by a cryptic caption that read: “All of us will eat breakfast. Asiko lo ma ya to. Good morning people.”

The phrase, often used colloquially in Nigeria, is widely interpreted as a reference to heartbreak or failed relationships.

The timing of the post — which coincided with Biola Bayo’s disclosure of her separation from husband Oluseyi — led many netizens to accuse Bakare of throwing shade at her fellow actress.

However, in a video response shared on Friday, Bakare dismissed the claims, describing the backlash as unfounded and asserting that the post was entirely unrelated to Biola Bayo’s situation.

“Bad commenters and trolls associations, something must be wrong with you,” she said. “Please let us all be guided. It is still June 5th here in California to be precise. I can never shade my own sister Biola Bayo. My prayers are with you. I didn’t get any updates. I was busy with my daughter’s graduation. Trolls are evil.”

Bakare emphasized her support for Biola, stressing that there was no ill intent behind her post.

Meanwhile, Biola Bayo had earlier in the week announced her separation from her husband, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The actress expressed her sadness over the decision but maintained that it was in their best interest.

As the dust settles, Bakare’s clarification aims to dispel any misunderstanding and reaffirm her solidarity with her colleague during a difficult time. Read More

Breaking Ranks… Akwa Ibom Governor Eno, Cabinet Dump PDP for APC

Breaking Ranks… Akwa Ibom Governor Eno, Cabinet Dump PDP for APC

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), completing a high-profile defection that had been anticipated for months.

The move, announced at a packed rally attended by top APC figures, marks a major political realignment in the South-South state, long seen as a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Eno was joined in the switch by a majority of his cabinet, lawmakers from both state and federal levels, and most of the state’s local government chairmen. The mass defection mirrors a similar political shift in Delta State earlier this year, when top PDP leaders crossed over to the ruling party.

Only three commissioners in Eno’s cabinet—Comrade Ini Ememobong, Emem Bob, and Prof. Emem Ibanga—resigned in protest, choosing to remain with the PDP. Despite their exit, the rest of the state executive council reaffirmed their support for Eno’s leadership and his new political direction.

Receiving the governor into the APC fold, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodimma, said: “The people of Akwa Ibom are shifting to the progressive fold, and we welcome you warmly as you connect to the centre.”

In his address, Governor Eno invoked the words of the Dalai Lama, emphasizing the balance between embracing change and preserving values: “Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values,” Eno quoted, adding, “Standing before you today, I make bold to state categorically that though I have by today’s event changed my political affiliation… my values… remain unchanged and sacrosanct.”

The governor cited strategic alignment with the federal government as the driving force behind his move: “Why am I in the APC, you may ask? The answer is short and simple: Enlightened State Interest predicated on the need to align our State with the Centre to attract more Federal presence.”

Eno emphasized that despite joining the APC, his administration would continue to run an inclusive and bipartisan government: “Akwa Ibom State will be a model of how to work together, pray together, aspire together, dream together and achieve together without the polarising impulses of partisan politics.”

The governor also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as an inspiration for his move, praising his economic reforms and leadership courage: “President Tinubu… has faced these challenging moments head-on and come up with solutions… Though in the immediate aftermath [they] are tough… they are beginning to bear long-lasting and sustainable effects.”

He described his defection as a “gift” to the President: “This movement, falling on a day that we mark Sallah, is our own gift to our President, and it has divine connotation.”

The event saw the symbolic presentation of the APC’s broom insignia to Eno by Governor Uzodimma, who assured the defectors of full support from the party and the federal leadership:
“You will not regret this decision. It is a homecoming for you… We will support Akwa Ibom State.”

Also present were APC governors including Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), among others, as well as key party leaders and former PDP bigwigs who had previously defected.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described the governor’s entry as a major boost:
“We are confident that his thoughtful decision will contribute to the greater progress of Akwa Ibom State and its people.”

Meanwhile, some figures from the PDP held their ground. Ememobong, one of the outgoing commissioners, said: “My decision was borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform [APC].”

However, he reaffirmed personal respect for Governor Eno:
“I have and will continue to have tremendous respect for HE Governor Umo Eno, even out of EXCO.”

The national leadership of the APC, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio—an Akwa Ibom native—and Vice President Kassim Shettima, celebrated the governor’s defection as further evidence of the party’s growing strength and inclusivity.

As Akwa Ibom recalibrates its political compass, many analysts see Eno’s shift as both a strategic move for federal alignment and a significant reshaping of regional politics. Whether this gamble pays off at the grassroots level remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Akwa Ibom’s political landscape will never be the same.

Toughest Days Are Over – Tinubu Assures Nigerians in Eid Message

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the nation’s most difficult days are behind it, expressing confidence that the country is now firmly on the path to renewed hope and prosperity.

In a message marking the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, personally signed and released on Thursday, Tinubu congratulated Nigerian Muslims and the global Ummah, emphasizing the deeper meaning of the sacred festival and urging citizens to embody the spirit of sacrifice, devotion, and compassion.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

“Eid-el-Kabir represents the high point of the sacred first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, a period filled with opportunities for acts of worship and good deeds,” the President said. “It is a time for gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless mercies upon us as individuals and as a nation.”

Addressing the nation’s economic situation and recent reforms, Tinubu acknowledged the difficulties many Nigerians have faced but stressed that better days lie ahead.

“Though the journey has not been easy, and some doubted our direction, the resilience of public and private sector leaders, along with the steadfast support of most Nigerians, is yielding results,” he said.

“I assure you that the toughest days are behind us. We are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity that we promised two years ago.”

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to long-term transformation through bold economic policies, noting that while results may not be immediate, structural changes are underway to ensure sustainable growth.

“There are no quick fixes, but we are committed to repairing the foundations of our economy once and for all,” Tinubu stated.

“We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. Let us hold on to our faith and persevere.”

In a show of compassion, Tinubu extended condolences to the victims of recent flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, which claimed lives and damaged property. He urged Nigerians to offer prayers and support to those affected and to aid government relief efforts.

“As we celebrate today, remember that Eid-el-Kabir enjoins love, compassion, and generosity for all, regardless of faith or background. Let us care for one another’s well-being during this season and always,” he said.

The President concluded his message with a call for national unity and prayers for Nigeria’s security personnel and leaders, as well as peace across the country and the world.

“May the joy and blessings of Eid-ul-Adha multiply in our lives and the life of our great nation. May Almighty Allah accept our worship and devotion as acts of Ibadah, and may His blessings be with us always,” Tinubu said. Read More

IGP Commissions 31 Gunboats to Strengthen Maritime Security

“This milestone reflects our renewed drive to strengthen maritime policing, improve rescue and patrol operations, and secure the nation’s blue economy” – IGP

IGP Commissions 31 Gunboats to Strengthen Maritime Security

Reaffirms Nigeria Police Commitment to Securing Waterways

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Thursday commissioned 31 newly acquired gunboats to enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s maritime security operations.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Lagos, represents a significant boost to the Force’s Marine Unit and a strategic step toward securing Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways. The move is aimed at curbing criminal activity, including piracy, smuggling, and economic sabotage, while safeguarding critical national infrastructure and supporting trade logistics.

Speaking at the event, IGP Egbetokun described the acquisition as a timely response to the evolving security threats within Nigeria’s maritime domain. He emphasized that the new vessels, fitted with advanced navigation and communication systems, will improve the operational capabilities of the Marine Unit.

“This milestone reflects our renewed drive to strengthen maritime policing, improve rescue and patrol operations, and secure the nation’s blue economy,” the IGP stated.

Top police officials present at the ceremony included DIG Yakubu Kwazi (Operations), AIG Adegoke Fayoade (Zone 2), AIG Funsho Adegboye (PMF), AIG Tunji Rilwan Disu (SPU), and ACP Chima Ogarashi, Force Marine Officer. The event also saw participation from key maritime stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Sensor and Safety Ltd.

IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Police Force’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration, pledging ongoing partnerships with maritime agencies to ensure safe and uninterrupted operations across Nigeria’s waterways.

He charged Marine Unit officers to maximize the use of the gunboats and remain vigilant in delivering on their mandate.

The commissioning marks a pivotal step in modernizing Nigeria’s maritime security infrastructure and reflects the Force’s proactive approach to addressing the country’s dynamic security challenges.
