Cash Promises, Empty Pockets: Team Ogun Athletes Protest Unpaid Allowances at National Sports Festival

Cash Promises, Empty Pockets: Team Ogun Athletes Protest Unpaid Allowances at National Sports Festival

Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State — The 22nd National Sports Festival took a dramatic turn on Wednesday morning as Team Ogun athletes staged a protest over unpaid allowances, blocking the main entrance of the Games Village at Babcock University.

The protest, which began at dawn, halted the movement of athletes from other states, many of whom were scheduled to compete in early morning events. The disruption caused significant delays and raised fresh concerns about the readiness and integrity of the festival’s host state.

Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as tense but non-violent, with placard-carrying athletes demanding immediate action from the Ogun State Government. The athletes accused officials of failing to fulfill financial commitments made prior to the start of the Gateway Games 2024.

“Yesterday, Team Ogun officials called for an emergency meeting in front of the Queen Esther Hostel, where many of us are lodged.

“Another meeting was also held this morning around 5 a.m., but no resolution was reached. That’s when things escalated,” said one athlete, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Despite being the official host of this year’s edition of the National Sports Festival, Ogun State now faces mounting criticism over its handling of athlete welfare.

So far, neither the Ogun State Ministry of Youth and Sports nor the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has issued an official response to the protest.

Ironically, the protest comes just days after Governor Dapo Abiodun publicly pledged substantial cash rewards for medal winners from Ogun State.

“Anyone who wins a gold medal in this festival will receive from me the sum of ₦2.5 million,” the governor announced during a visit to the Athletics Camp.
“For every silver medal, I will give that medalist ₦1.5 million. Anyone who gets a bronze medal will receive ₦1 million.”

The promise was met with loud cheers at the time, as many athletes had invested months of rigorous training in the hopes of bringing glory to their state. However, it now appears that the immediate concern is not bonus rewards, but basic allowances and support during the competition itself.

While the cash incentives announced by the governor are typically disbursed post-competition, Wednesday’s protest suggests deeper issues related to trust, transparency, and administrative accountability.

Meanwhile, Team Ogun continues to perform impressively on the field, ranking third on the overall medals table as of Tuesday morning with a total haul of 114 medals — including 44 gold, 29 silver, and 41 bronze.

Still, the off-track unrest threatens to overshadow what should be a moment of sporting pride for the host state.

As frustration builds, many are now calling for urgent intervention by senior state officials to restore order, uphold commitments, and prevent further embarrassment at a festival meant to celebrate unity and athletic excellence. Read More

Tinubu’s 2027 Endorsements Earned, Not Fear of Opposition, Says Senator Orji Kalu

“The opposition must fight, that’s their job. But our job is to deliver, and we’re doing it. In the coming years, Nigerians will appreciate what Mr. President is doing.”

Tinubu’s 2027 Endorsements Earned, Not Fear of Opposition, Says Senator Orji Kalu

Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has firmly dismissed speculation that recent endorsements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid are driven by fear of opposition coalitions.

Speaking with Senate correspondents on Tuesday ahead of plenary, the former Senate Chief Whip emphasized that the support Tinubu is receiving stems from his leadership record and policy decisions—not political anxiety.

“The APC is not afraid of any opposition coalition,” Kalu stated. “We are the ruling party and we love Nigeria. That is why many of us are investing in industries across the country to create jobs beyond government efforts.”

Now serving as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission, Kalu insisted that criticism from the opposition is a normal feature of democracy, and should not be mistaken for a sign of weakness from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The opposition must fight, that’s their job. But our job is to deliver, and we’re doing it,” he said. “In the coming years, Nigerians will appreciate what Mr. President is doing.”

Kalu also highlighted that the South-East region had thrown its support behind Tinubu earlier than most, noting that key endorsements were driven by regional leaders, including governors and lawmakers.

On economic matters, the senator praised President Tinubu for implementing bold, though controversial, reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy and unification of the exchange rate.

“These are not easy decisions, and yes, they come with short-term pain. But they are necessary if we want long-term economic stability,” Kalu noted.

The senator’s comments add to a growing chorus within the APC rallying behind President Tinubu, as discussions surrounding the 2027 elections begin to surface. Read More

$17.1 Million in Cash: EFCC Investigator Alleges Emefiele’s Aide Delivered Bags of Dollars Over Three Years

“Emefiele always confirmed receipt of the money via phone after each transaction”

$17.1 Million in Cash: EFCC Investigator Alleges Emefiele’s Aide Delivered Bags of Dollars Over Three Years

Explosive testimony emerged in an Ikeja High Court as an investigator from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleged that a close aide to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, received a staggering $17.1 million in cash on his behalf over a three-year span.

Mr. Alvan Gurumnaan, an Assistant Commandant with the EFCC, revealed this while giving evidence in the ongoing trial of Emefiele, who is facing a 19-count charge involving corruption, illegal gratification, and abuse of office. His co-defendant, Henry Omoile, stands accused on three counts relating to unlawful acceptance of gifts.

The charges against the duo include fraud totaling $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion.

Led in evidence by EFCC lead counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Gurumnaan disclosed that intelligence reports against Emefiele had been received even during his time in office. The allegations included “abuse of office, procurement fraud, receiving gratification, and living beyond his known means.”

According to the investigator, Mr. Monday Osazuwa, a close aide to Emefiele, allegedly collected the $17.1 million from a businessman at a location in Victoria Island, Lagos, between September 2020 and June 2023.

“Osazuwa collected these sums in various tranches and delivered them to Emefiele at his Ikoyi residence,” Gurumnaan stated.

He further testified that part of the funds was reportedly handed over to co-defendant Henry Omoile on Emefiele’s instructions.

In a sweeping investigation, Gurumnaan said the EFCC’s special operations team issued document requests and invited several CBN staff for questioning. “One name that surfaced repeatedly was Eric Odoh, Emefiele’s former personal assistant,” he said, adding that Odoh has since absconded and is believed to be moving between the UK, Canada, and other countries.

The EFCC also contacted the Code of Conduct Bureau and Corporate Affairs Commission during their probe.

In his testimony, Gurumnaan said the businessman who allegedly paid the bribes confirmed the transactions and showed WhatsApp chats as proof. “Emefiele always confirmed receipt of the money via phone after each transaction,” he said.

The prosecution sought to tender the printed WhatsApp conversations as evidence. While Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo (SAN), did not object, Mr. Adeyinka Kotoye (SAN), counsel to Omoile, reserved his objections for the final written address.

Justice Rahman Oshodi admitted the documents but granted the defence permission to formally apply for an independent forensic examination of the exhibits.

The court adjourned the case to October 7 for continuation of trial. Read More

“They Want to Paint Me Black”: Baale of Sango-Ota Cries Out Over Alleged Plot to Frame, Discredit Him

Baale Akilo, who has reportedly survived similar attacks in the past, is calling on the people of Aworiland to stay alert and vigilant

“They Want to Paint Me Black”: Baale of Sango-Ota Cries Out Over Alleged Plot to Frame, Discredit Him

By Lukman Omikunle

In a dramatic development that has stirred both concern and solidarity across Aworiland, the palace of Baale Abdulwasiu Olawale Akilo—traditional ruler and Oba-designate of Sango-Ota—has raised a serious security alert, warning of a calculated plot by unnamed individuals to frame him using planted evidence and media propaganda.

In a public statement issued on behalf of the Baale, Prince Elder Lawal Lamidi Alabi, Chief of Staff of the Iganmode Afeleja Foundation and President of the Forum of Awori Intelligentsia, claimed that “hoodlums and disgruntled elements” are working to implant live ammunition and other incriminating materials within the palace grounds in a bid to derail the Baale’s elevation to Obaship.

“This is not just an attack on a man,” Prince Alabi said in an exclusive conversation with our correspondent. “It is an attack on the will of the Awori people, on tradition, and on peace. They want to dent his image, ruin his credibility, and block his path to kingship.”

According to intelligence reportedly gathered by the palace, the alleged conspirators are planning what they describe as a “final blow”—a smear campaign designed to implicate Baale Akilo and his supporters in criminal activities.

The statement also warned that media professionals may have been hired to propagate these narratives, should the plot succeed.

Baale Akilo, who has reportedly survived similar attacks in the past, is calling on the people of Aworiland to stay alert and vigilant. He also urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to take action in this matter.

“The Almighty Olodumare has protected us before,” Baale Akilo was quoted as saying through his representative. “We believe He will protect us again. But we also need our people to speak out, stay aware, and share this information with security agencies. This is our collective responsibility.”

Supporters of the Baale gathered at the palace shortly after the statement was released, expressing their loyalty and readiness to defend what they described as a legitimate and righteous traditional process.

“This is beyond politics,” said community leader Mrs. Modinat Olatunji. “Baale Akilo has always stood for peace and progress. We will not let bad eggs disrupt our land.”

The palace urged residents to pass the intelligence report on to relevant security and defense agencies to prevent escalation and protect both the Baale and the integrity of Aworiland.

“We must not allow mischief-makers to turn our sacred land into a battleground of lies,” Prince Alabi concluded.

As tensions mount ahead of the anticipated transition to Obaship, all eyes remain on Sango-Ota. The hope among many is that tradition, truth, and justice will ultimately prevail.

“No Room for Rogues…” Police Launch Probe into Highway Extortion Scandal

The Police assured citizens that those found culpable will be held fully accountable, urging the public to continue reporting unprofessional behavior of bad officers in the force

“No Room for Rogues…” Police Launch Probe into Highway Extortion Scandal

In a swift response to a viral video exposing extortion by officers on the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a formal investigation and initiated disciplinary proceedings against those involved.

Six officers—alongside their supervising Chief Superintendent of Police—have been summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, following widespread public outrage over the video. They appeared before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who condemned their actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”

The IGP wasted no time in ordering immediate disciplinary measures. The accused officers have been issued official queries and are now facing orderly room trials—a step that could lead to dismissals or other severe sanctions if found guilty.

Reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing commitment to upholding integrity, professionalism, and public accountability.

“This incident is not just a breach of the law, but a betrayal of public trust,” the IGP stated. “Officers who fall short of our standards will face the full weight of internal discipline.”

The Police assured citizens that those found culpable will be held fully accountable, urging the public to continue reporting unprofessional behavior to help cleanse the system.

This latest action underscores the Force’s renewed drive to restore confidence in law enforcement and set a clear example that misconduct—no matter how minor or who is involved—will not be tolerated. Read More
