No Vague Promises — Igbo Group Demands Clear FG Commitments on State Creation, Representation

The Global Executive Committee of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the Federal Government to clearly outline what it is prepared to offer the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting the region will not enter another electoral cycle on the basis of assumptions or vague political statements.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by factional Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Acting Secretary-General Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, the pan-Igbo body urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to open a structured political dialogue with the people of the South-East.

Ohanaeze stressed that Ndigbo have a right to know the specific offers on the table before the next polls. The group described its demand as a call for clarity, accountability and open negotiation rather than a request for political favour.

The organisation listed key issues it wants the Federal Government to address openly. These include equitable political representation, the creation of an additional state in the South-East, rail connectivity, maritime development, economic integration, national reconciliation, and the future of the region within the Nigerian federation.

“Ohanaeze is asking the Federal Government to state clearly whether it supports the creation of an additional state in the South-East,” the statement said. The group argued that such clarity is essential as Ndigbo weigh their political options ahead of 2027.

It further maintained that fair political and administrative representation remains a legitimate national issue that should continue to be discussed through constitutional processes. Political engagement, Ohanaeze said, can only be meaningful when both sides are transparent about what is being requested, what is being offered, and what can realistically be delivered.

The organisation concluded that the South-East should not be expected to approach another election season without clear commitments on matters affecting the region’s political, economic, infrastructural and constitutional interests.
