Nigeria Police to Celebrate 70 Years of Women in Policing — IGP Egbetokun Lauds Female Officers’ Impact

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of women in policing, celebrating seven decades of courage, resilience, and distinguished service since the enlistment of the first set of female officers in 1955.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the two-day event will hold from December 3 to 4, 2025, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM.

The celebration will bring together serving and retired female police officers to mark the milestone with a series of events, including a national lecture, historical exhibition, interactive panel sessions, and an outreach programme aimed at promoting inclusivity and capacity development within the Force.

IGP Egbetokun commended the invaluable contributions of women officers to the operational success and public image of the Police Force, describing them as pillars of integrity, empathy, and excellence.

“Their dedication and compassion have remained integral to the foundation of policing in Nigeria,” the IGP was quoted as saying.

He highlighted that female officers have excelled across all areas of policing — from administration and investigations to tactical operations and leadership — redefining law enforcement with a blend of professionalism and humanity.

Hundeyin noted that the event is in line with the IGP’s strategic vision to strengthen professionalism, inclusiveness, and gender balance across the ranks of the Force.

The anniversary celebration also underscores the NPF’s ongoing commitment to empowering women officers to take on more leadership roles and contribute effectively to modern policing in Nigeria.

The Force extended appreciation to all female officers, past and present, for their courage, professionalism, and enduring service, describing them as a source of pride and inspiration to the institution and the nation at large.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women officers to excel in leadership roles across the country,” Hundeyin added.

The announcement was contained in an official press statement released by the Force Public Relations Office, verified through the Nigeria Police Force’s official communication channels.
As of publication, the anniversary programme is confirmed for December 3–4, 2025, and further details are expected to be made public by the Police Headquarters, Abuja, in the coming weeks.
