NPFL: Why Ogunbote resigned as Akure Sunshine Stars FC Coach

By Abdulrasheed Adelakun

“I took the job in the anticipation that we will continue from where we stopped the last time”

Head Coach of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure, Gbenga Ogunbote, has resigned his appointment as the head coach of the team hinging reason on a very low financial commitment to the team.

In his letter of resignation dated 26/05/2021 and seen by newsheadline247, the veteran coach said he took the job again “in anticipation that we will continue from where we stopped the last time I coached the team” and with the hope of better remuneration and welfare of both players and the entire crew of the team from the state government.

He lamented the poorer state of the team’s financial status which may have affected the team’s performance in the ongoing 2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)

“I took the job in the anticipation that we will continue from where we stopped the last time I coached the team, but on this occasion, the welfare of the team is way off the mark such that it affects the morale of the players and collective motivations of the team,” Ogunbote said.

He stated further that, “I hereby appreciate all and tender my resignation with this month salary forfeited in lieu of my notice, whilst I expect all my outstanding salaries, sign-on fees and bonuses be paid in due course for proper disengagement”

Sunshine Stars had been in very poor form, home and away, all through the season, drawing eight and losing eight of their last sixteen matches, hence their swimming in relegation waters.
