The Osun State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the attempted assassination of the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola, who was attacked by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at about 9:50 p.m. in the MDS area of Osogbo when two armed men riding a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on Ajibola, leaving him with serious injuries.
The politician was immediately rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, where he is currently receiving treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that he is in stable condition and responding positively to medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, said officers responded swiftly to a distress call, evacuated the victim to a medical facility, and launched an intensive operation to track down the attackers.
According to Ojelabi, preliminary investigations led to the recovery of critical exhibits from the crime scene, which are now undergoing forensic examination.
“A team of police officers swiftly evacuated the victim to a medical facility, where he is receiving treatment. Medical personnel have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is stable and responding positively to treatment,” he stated.
The police spokesman added that operational teams had been deployed immediately after the attack to pursue the fleeing suspects and ensure they are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident. He directed all relevant units of the command to deploy every available resource toward identifying and arresting those responsible.
The police command assured residents that it would leave no stone unturned in the ongoing investigation and appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in apprehending the perpetrators.
Reacting to the attack, the Osun State Government condemned the shooting and called for a thorough and impartial investigation.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Hon. Kolapo Alimi, the government described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable.
Alimi disclosed that one of the occupants of the vehicle conveying Ajibola alleged that gunmen suddenly opened fire on the vehicle while they were returning from the MDS area of Osogbo. According to him, the occupants managed to escape to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety before the attackers fled the scene.
The commissioner urged security agencies to conduct a professional investigation without compromise and ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice.
“It is an unfortunate incident which should not be allowed to go uninvestigated. The culprits must be brought to book,” Alimi said.
He further noted that emerging indications suggest the attack may have political undertones, stressing the need for a fearless, unbiased, and transparent investigation to uncover the masterminds behind the shooting.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made, while security agencies continued efforts to track down the suspects.
