The Presidency has accused Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, of using his social media platforms to campaign for his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, during the state’s governorship election.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made the claim during an interview with Symfoni TV.
Ajayi argued that Davido’s outspoken comments and social media activities during the election were politically motivated and not driven by concern for the people of Osun State.
According to the presidential aide, Davido actively participated in the election campaign and supported his uncle’s bid to retain power.
“Davido was an active participant in the process. He went all out for his uncle to win the election. He was part of the process and even held a position in the campaign structure,” Ajayi said.
He maintained that Davido’s posts should therefore be viewed as partisan political activity rather than expressions of concern for Osun residents.
Ajayi, however, acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic system guarantees freedom of expression, allowing citizens to express their views on social media.
He nevertheless criticised what he described as reckless allegations, warning that unsubstantiated claims could inflame tensions and potentially trigger violence.
The presidential aide further claimed that Davido would not have been able to make similar statements in countries such as Rwanda or Ethiopia without being required to provide evidence.
“You don’t make reckless claims that you don’t have evidence of. These things are capable of inciting the public into violence,” Ajayi said.
The comments add another layer to the political tensions surrounding the Osun governorship election, with the Presidency and supporters of Governor Adeleke offering contrasting views on the conduct of political actors and public figures during the electoral process.
