Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a Senator representing Ijebu East Senatorial District on Wednesday moved the Senate to direct federal agencies to urgently intervene to mitigate flooding disasters in several areas of his constituency.

Moving a motion on the “Urgent need to intervene in the flooding issues in Sagamu, Ijebu Areas of Ogun East Senatorial District, Ogun State, Edu and Patigi Areas of Kwara North Senatorial District of Kwara State & other parts of the country,” Sen. Daniel noted that the challenges had become grave and had sometimes resulted in the death of a child in Sagamu.

Daniel, an engineer-turned-politician, further noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted high rainfall this year, hence the need for relevant federal agencies to urgently begin the dredging of blocked water channels and construction of dams.

The motion, which was co-sponsored by Sen. Sadiq Umar (Kwara North), received overwhelming support amongst Senators who spoke expressly on the menace of flooding in their respective constituencies.

The Senate therefore resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to liaise with relevant federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies to put in place erosion prevention and management mechanisms.

Also, National Emergency Management Agency was directed to urgently provide relief materials to victims of flooding disaster in Sagamu and other areas in Ogun East Senatorial District.
