Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have paid glowing tributes to Nigerian women, commending their resilience and contributions to national development as the country joined the global community to mark the International Women’s Day 2026.
In a message posted on his verified X handle, the President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and girls through policies focused on education, economic empowerment and leadership inclusion.
“Our duty as a government and as a society is to continue creating the conditions where every Nigerian girl can learn, every woman can thrive economically, and every voice can contribute to our national development,” Tinubu said.
The President praised Nigerian women for their courage, resilience and determination across various sectors, noting that they continue to play vital roles in driving the country’s growth and stability.
“Today, on International Women’s Day, I celebrate the women of Nigeria, at home and abroad,” he wrote.
Tinubu highlighted the significant roles women play in homes, farms, markets, offices and leadership positions, describing them as pillars of families, communities and the broader national economy.
“They are mothers who nurture, entrepreneurs who build, professionals who lead, and citizens who continue to shape the destiny of our country with resilience and dignity,” he added.
The President also acknowledged the historic contributions of Nigerian women to the nation’s democratic journey and development, noting that many have broken barriers in pursuit of progress.
“Nigeria’s progress has always carried the imprint of women who refused to accept limits placed before them,” he said.
He paid tribute to women who played crucial roles in the country’s struggle for democracy and the millions who contribute daily to sustaining families and strengthening communities.
Tinubu stressed that empowering women and girls remains central to Nigeria’s development agenda, emphasising that inclusive growth cannot be achieved without their full participation.
“When Nigerian women rise, Nigeria rises,” the President declared, urging continued support for initiatives that promote gender equality and women’s leadership.
In her message marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, the First Lady said empowering women should be viewed not as charity but as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future.
Mrs Tinubu said the theme of this year’s celebration—“Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”—highlights the urgent need to ensure equal access to opportunities for women and girls.
“This year’s theme reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity; it is an investment in our collective future,” she said.
According to her, providing women with access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms and justice would strengthen families and communities while fostering national development.
“When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities and a more inclusive nation,” she said.
The First Lady joined millions of Nigerians and people around the world in celebrating the achievements and resilience of women and girls.
“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage, tenacity and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world,” she added.
