Donald Trump says he will accept the 2026 US midterm election results as Democrats take control of the House and Senate, raising the prospect of political battles over legislation.

Trump Accepts US Midterm Results as Democrats Win Congress

United States President Donald Trump has said he is “absolutely willing to accept” the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections, as Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in a major setback for his Republican Party.

Trump made the remarks during a telephone interview with The New York Times on Tuesday night, as election results showed Democrats making significant gains in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” Trump said, adding that he was prepared to work with the opposition party.

“We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out,” he said.

The President attributed the Republican Party’s poor performance partly to his absence from the ballot, arguing that the outcome would have been different if he had personally contested the election.

In a post on his Truth Social platform before his remarks to the newspaper, Trump claimed Republicans would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE” if his name had appeared on the ballot.

The results marked a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington, with Democrats taking control of the House and Senate, giving them greater influence over legislation and congressional oversight during the remainder of Trump’s term.

Trump also acknowledged that the war in Iran may have contributed to the Republican Party’s losses, although he defended his decision to launch the military campaign and described it as a “very wise decision”.
