Talabi is widely recognized as a key figure in the unfolding strategy of the Dapo Abiodun administration

Amidst the growing speculation, insiders have shed light on why Tokunbo Talabi, the billionaire serving as the Secretary to the State Government of Ogun (SSG), might not be the next Governor, despite his undeniable competence.

Talabi is widely recognized as a key figure in the unfolding strategy of the Dapo Abiodun administration.

Although Talabi shows promise as a potential governor, his prospects are hampered by the principle of zoning.

Hailing from Ogun East, the same region as Governor Abiodun, who is currently serving his second term, Talabi has been effectively ruled out as a contender due to this political tradition in Ogun State.

According to informed sources, the gubernatorial seat is expected to shift to Ogun West in the next election cycle, with the Yewa region being touted as a favored candidate on moral grounds.

Nevertheless, political dynamics suggest that Ogun Central is also positioning itself to field Abiodun’s successor, likely in collaboration with players from Ogun East.

Historically, Ogun East and Ogun Central have dominated the gubernatorial landscape, leveraging their substantial voter bases and mutual support. Conversely, Ogun West, specifically Yewa-Awori, has struggled to present a unified front for leadership.

Prior to his involvement in the Abiodun administration, Talabi had made a mark as an investor across key sectors such as agro-allied industries, steel, manufacturing, logistics, real estate, and telecommunications.

Among the prominent contenders within the APC for the post of Governor Abiodun’s successor in 2027 are Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola from Ogun West (popularly known as Yayi), former Minister Sharafa Ishola from Ogun Central, a close associate of President Bola Tinubu and Minister for Finance, Wale Edun from Ogun Central.

Others include the former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole from Ogun Central, and the current Deputy Governor of the State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele from Ogun West.
