President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to remain committed to the country’s progress, urging citizens not to lose faith in the nation even when they disagree with his administration.
The President made the appeal on Friday during a nationwide broadcast commemorating the 27th anniversary of Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic rule.
Tinubu emphasized that constructive criticism is a vital component of democracy but warned that public trust in national institutions must not be eroded.
According to him, democracy can only thrive when citizens continue to believe in the democratic process and the institutions that uphold it. He identified the National Assembly, the judiciary, the media, and civil society organisations as key pillars safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
“Criticise me, disagree with me, but never stop believing in the nation,” the President said.
Addressing young Nigerians, Tinubu encouraged them to see the country as their future and contribute actively to its development rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere.
“To our young people, Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, work here, and thrive here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” he stated.
The President also paid tribute to members of the armed forces, the police, and intelligence agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the country.
He further expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads for their efforts in promoting peace, unity, and reconciliation across the nation.
Tinubu’s remarks formed part of activities marking Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12 in honour of Nigeria’s democratic journey and commitment to constitutional governance.
