Governor Biodun Oyebanji has etched his name into Ekiti State’s political history after becoming the first incumbent governor to secure re-election since the state’s creation three decades ago.
His emphatic victory in the recent governorship election has sparked celebrations across the state and reinforced the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while also serving as a potential indicator of the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For many political observers, however, the victory is not merely a moment for celebration but also an opportunity for reflection and strategic planning. With less than seven months before the next round of national and legislative elections, attention is already shifting to how the Ekiti APC can translate its governorship success into stronger support for President Bola Tinubu and other party candidates.
Despite the scale of Oyebanji’s victory, voter turnout remained a concern. Out of nearly one million registered voters in the state, only about 382,000 participated in the election. While the APC had set an ambitious target of 500,000 votes, the party secured more than 319,000 votes, enough for a landslide victory but still below expectations.
Analysts say the low turnout highlights the need for greater voter mobilisation and civic engagement. They also point to the significant number of rejected ballots as evidence that voter education efforts must be intensified before future elections.
The Formula Behind the Victory
Observers attribute Oyebanji’s success to his inclusive style of governance and ability to build bridges across political divides. Throughout his first term, the governor cultivated relationships with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil servants, youth groups, artisans, women associations and opposition figures.
His efforts to maintain cordial ties with former governors, including Kayode Fayemi, Ayodele Fayose, Segun Oni and Niyi Adebayo, were widely viewed as a major factor in fostering political stability and broad-based support.
Residents also cited the governor’s accessibility and grassroots engagement as reasons for his popularity. His frequent interactions with ordinary citizens, visits to rural communities and emphasis on participatory governance helped strengthen public confidence in his administration.
Performance as Campaign Strength
The governor’s supporters point to infrastructure development, improved welfare for workers and pensioners, fiscal transparency, agricultural expansion and youth empowerment programmes as key achievements that influenced voters.
His administration’s focus on digital innovation, including initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s technology ecosystem and creating opportunities for young people, also received positive reviews from stakeholders.
According to government officials, the election outcome reflects public approval of the administration’s six-pillar development agenda and its efforts to promote economic growth and social development across the state.
Challenges of a Second Term
While the victory cements Oyebanji’s political standing, expectations for his second term are high. Residents are calling for continued investment in roads, healthcare, education and rural development.
Agriculture remains another critical area, with many stakeholders urging the administration to expand support for farmers, improve access to mechanisation and strengthen agricultural value chains to enhance food security and create jobs.
Political observers also note that maintaining party unity will be crucial as competition for political positions intensifies ahead of future elections.
Looking Toward 2027 and Beyond
The APC’s success in the governorship election has boosted confidence within the party, but leaders acknowledge that sustaining momentum ahead of the 2027 elections will require greater voter mobilisation and strategic planning.
Meanwhile, discussions about succession politics have already begun to emerge, despite the fact that Oyebanji’s new term has only just begun. Analysts predict that ambitions among political stakeholders could shape the state’s political landscape in the coming years.
In his victory speech, Oyebanji described the election result as a powerful endorsement of continuity, stability and development. He pledged to govern with humility and ensure that the benefits of government reach every corner of the state.
“The people of Ekiti have spoken with one voice,” the governor said. “This mandate is a call to deepen development, strengthen unity and create more opportunities for all.”
For now, Ekiti is celebrating a historic political milestone. The challenge ahead will be translating that electoral success into lasting development and preparing the APC for the battles that lie ahead in 2027.
