Governor Biodun Oyebanji has etched his name into Ekiti State’s political history after becoming the first incumbent governor to secure re-election since the state’s creation three decades ago.
His emphatic victory in the recent governorship election has sparked celebrations across the state and reinforced the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while also serving as a potential indicator of the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor’s supporters point to infrastructure development, improved welfare for workers and pensioners, fiscal transparency, agricultural expansion and youth empowerment programmes as key achievements that influenced voters.
His administration’s focus on digital innovation, including initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s technology ecosystem and creating opportunities for young people, also received positive reviews from stakeholders.
According to government officials, the election outcome reflects public approval of the administration’s six-pillar development agenda and its efforts to promote economic growth and social development across the state.
Challenges of a Second Term
While the victory cements Oyebanji’s political standing, expectations for his second term are high. Residents are calling for continued investment in roads, healthcare, education and rural development.
Agriculture remains another critical area, with many stakeholders urging the administration to expand support for farmers, improve access to mechanisation and strengthen agricultural value chains to enhance food security and create jobs.
Political observers also note that maintaining party unity will be crucial as competition for political positions intensifies ahead of future elections.
Looking Toward 2027 and Beyond
The APC’s success in the governorship election has boosted confidence within the party, but leaders acknowledge that sustaining momentum ahead of the 2027 elections will require greater voter mobilisation and strategic planning.
Meanwhile, discussions about succession politics have already begun to emerge, despite the fact that Oyebanji’s new term has only just begun. Analysts predict that ambitions among political stakeholders could shape the state’s political landscape in the coming years.
In his victory speech, Oyebanji described the election result as a powerful endorsement of continuity, stability and development. He pledged to govern with humility and ensure that the benefits of government reach every corner of the state.
“The people of Ekiti have spoken with one voice,” the governor said. “This mandate is a call to deepen development, strengthen unity and create more opportunities for all.”
