Nollywood actress and producer Yvonne Jegede has opened up on why many celebrities choose not to speak out on national issues, saying public figures are often met with hostility instead of support whenever they voice concerns about the country’s challenges.

In a post shared on her social media page, Jegede said repeated criticism from Nigerians discourages celebrities from speaking during periods of crisis.

“The more I speak of the uncommon things I see happening in my country, the more people drag me. I see why people stay quiet in times of crisis,” she wrote.

The actress explained that she has always believed in standing up against injustice and speaking for those facing hardship, but admitted that the constant backlash has made her question whether such efforts are worthwhile.

“I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon, but you see Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry is the order of the day,” she stated.

Jegede also criticised Nigeria’s tax system, arguing that despite citizens paying taxes, many still have to provide services that should ordinarily be the government’s responsibility.

“After they work hard to earn and then pay their taxes, they should help the government provide a better life for the masses, while the tax collected is meant for some family members,” she wrote.

Expressing concern over the country’s situation, the actress said the current realities have had a significant impact on her mental wellbeing.

“This country has stretched my mental health to its limits,” she added.
