Seyi Makinde has picked former DSS Director-General Lawal Musa Daura as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election under the Allied Peoples Movement

Makinde Picks Ex-DSS Boss Lawal Daura as 2027 Running Mate

Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, Seyi Makinde, has picked former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Musa Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Makinde announced Daura’s selection during the APM National Convention in Bauchi on Thursday, where he was formally endorsed as the party’s presidential candidate and other party officials were elected. The development has been reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets.

Daura, who previously served as the DSS Director-General from 2015 to 2018, joined the APM shortly before the convention after leaving the African Democratic Congress, according to reports. He replaces Ibrahim Adamu Bala, who had earlier been announced as Makinde’s running mate in what was described as an interim arrangement pending the convention.

Speaking after unveiling his running mate, Makinde said the opposition must look beyond the immediate ambition of winning power and concentrate on offering Nigerians a credible alternative capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

He said the 2027 election should provide citizens with a genuine choice rather than another round of campaign promises and political rhetoric.

“The task before us is not merely to win an election. It is to give Nigerians a real choice about the future of their country,” Makinde said.

The governor also warned that the coming campaign season would be dominated by promises and slogans from political parties and candidates, urging Nigerians to demand competence, vision and accountability from those seeking their votes.

The choice of Daura gives the Makinde-led APM ticket a strong security focus, with reports indicating that the former intelligence chief was deliberately selected to help address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Makinde’s emergence as the APM presidential candidate and his selection of Daura as running mate mark another development in the early realignment of political forces ahead of the 2027 general election, with the governor pledging to work with like-minded politicians to pursue what he described as a better Nigeria.
