President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who passed away at the age of 84.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President recalled Jacobs’ distinguished journey. After training at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, the actor built a successful career in British television and international film before returning to Nigeria, where he became a major force in the local film industry.
Tinubu noted that Jacobs earned major industry honours and awards for his pioneering roles and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
The President described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished performers and a towering figure whose career spanned theatre, television and film on the global stage. He acknowledged Jacobs’ significant contributions to the development and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, saying the veteran inspired generations of actors and filmmakers through his exceptional talent, discipline and dedication.
Tinubu also praised Jacobs’ remarkable ability to bring depth, dignity and authenticity to every character he portrayed, earning widespread admiration both in Nigeria and abroad.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn,” the President said.
“The nation recognises the enormous contributions of Nigeria’s creative practitioners to the country’s cultural identity, global image and economic development. Olu Jacobs played a big role in creating this identity.”
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Jacobs family, especially his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues in the Nigerian film industry and the entire creative community. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the celebrated thespian’s soul.
