Former Sokoto governor Attahiru Bafarawa says he will vote for Tinubu in 2027 if the President restores peace in Sokoto and other parts of Northern Nigeria

2027: Bafarawa Gives Tinubu Condition for His Vote, Says One Month Is Enough to End Northern Insecurity

Former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, has said he would vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election if the President restores peace to Sokoto and other parts of Northern Nigeria.

Bafarawa said his support for Tinubu would depend on the administration’s ability to tackle insecurity and restore normalcy to communities affected by banditry and other security threats.

Speaking with FRI, an online Hausa medium, the former governor said the President had the resources and security apparatus needed to address the crisis, insisting that there was little time left to deliver results.

“My only condition for allowing my vote to go to President Tinubu is for him to ensure peace and allow full normalcy to return to my area and other Northern parts,” he said.

Bafarawa argued that Tinubu could make a significant difference within a short period if his administration prioritised security.

“As a leader who has power, money and security, three months or even one month is enough for him to change the insecurity narrative in the Northern region,” he said.

The former governor said he was not seeking campaign funds or personal benefits, stressing that his primary concern was the restoration of peace and economic activities in affected communities.

“Look, as far as I am concerned, I don’t want anything in the name of campaign money. What I want is for President Tinubu to do everything he can to ensure peace and allow markets, schools, farming and other livelihood activities to return to our communities. I assure him that I will vote for him,” he said.

Bafarawa also disclosed that he had met Tinubu only once since he became President, alleging that the encounter took place at a mosque.

He claimed that an individual Tinubu had asked to facilitate a meeting between them later refused to take him to the Presidency and blocked his telephone numbers.

The former governor, who said he was not a member of the All Progressives Congress, maintained that his willingness to support Tinubu was tied to the President’s ability to end insecurity in the North.

He said the disruption of education, farming and other essential activities had left many communities in a difficult situation.

“But it is unacceptable that today, our children cannot go to school. Don’t anybody who denies you education deny you life? Villagers cannot go to farms, and so many towns have been completely sacked. That is why, at this juncture, if Tinubu ensures peace, he is simply my candidate,” he said.

On Yari’s appointment

Bafarawa also defended the appointment of former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, as Director-General of Tinubu’s campaign, despite persistent bandit attacks in Zamfara State.

He argued that Yari, as an APC member, was expected to respect the party’s decisions and could find it difficult to reject an appointment made by the President.

“So I don’t see anything wrong with Abdulaziz Yari accepting to be DG of the campaign for President Tinubu because he is doing a job he has been appointed to do. And don’t forget, it would be disrespectful for him to say no,” he said.

Bafarawa added that Yari had consulted several people before accepting the appointment and sought further advice afterwards, describing the process as evidence of his integrity.

His comments place the restoration of security in Northern Nigeria at the centre of his stated position ahead of the 2027 election, while making clear that his support for Tinubu would depend on the administration’s response to the crisis.
